Commercial Description:
During the fermentation of the first batch of this Abbey-style dubbel, the yeast «died» and was «resurrected» by brewer Chris Cashell. This beer is not unlike those that certain Belgian monks have been brewing since the 16th century. Made with five types of barley malt and lots of sugar, this beer is quite strong and flavorful, without being too sweet.

Draft, at Tria Fermentation School (8/8/07). Poured reddish amber, with a thin off-white head. Sugary sweet aroma, with caramel, dark fruit, with some herbs and hops. Flavor is sweet, almost cloying, with candi sugar and some fruit. some hops evident in the finish. I really wanted to like this, but i found it way too sweet. I’ll give it another shot someday...

Brewers Art Resurrection pours murky amber. It tastes like no Belgian dubbel I have had and that says a lot! Way too malty, none of the distinctive Belgian yeast flavors present; buttery ale - buttery does not seem like a word I would ever want to use for a beer. This beer has a big reputation among beer circles, but frankly I don’t get it. I might have to give this another try....

Hoppier than a dubbel and not as complex. Easy to drink. Simple dubbel, dark roasted malts, but with better hoppiness than I expected.

Draft at Max’s. Dark clear copper red with a white head. Diacetyl butter nose full of coarse malts. Buttery, infected flavord dark fruit - oranges and peach rind. Hoppy and fruity, I can see some IPA characteristics in this beer, not so much the abbey dubbel aspects. Overall it’s not very good.

Draft @ Frisco Grille in Columbia, MD. Pours a deep amber hue. Sticky lacing with an off-white head. Caramel malt up front with fruity esters and spicy yeast. warm, dry finish. Not bad at all.

Sampled on 2/16/07 on cask at Max’s 3rd Annual Belgian Beer Festival: Pours a mostly transparent dark copper orange with a well-lacing off-white head. Aroma of lightly toasty and sweet caramel malts with a hint of earthiness. Body starts with a fairly full and sweet caramely fruity malty character with some earthy bitter notes and a smooth, toasty malty finish. Decent authenticity and drinkability.

on tap at 3rd North Bar in Philly which is near Abbaye another great philly beer bar. have to say, I know there are a lot of high ratings for this beer below but I personally hated this one. makes me wondered if the tap was gone wrong or something. it tasted overwhelming of malts and hops. just and overload of bitterness. very yeasty, in the nose and taste, ru, raisins - all just really strong flavors that didn’t go well together like when you blend colors and get one of those ugly green-brown blends. well thats a metaphor for the unification of the rum, yeasty, raising, bitter hops, fruity, caramel, sweet ingredients. yuk.

(draught at restaurant) Nice amber with small off-white head. Sweetish malt and yeast aroma. Flavor of sweet malt, yeast, fruit
