Commercial Description:
A healthy dose of Northwest hops balances the sweetness of black strap molasses to make this a velvet-rich, creamy descendent of the great Irish stouts. A real treat for those who crave the dark side of brewing.

Pours deep black with a medium tan head. Nose is roasted malt, cream, molasses. Molasses predominates in the excellent flavor, with coffee, roasted malt, and chocolate. Heavy, creamy mouthfeel. Rather sweet. Pretty damn good.

Had this beer on 8/25/1999. Color is a deep thick black with good carbonation and head. Aroma is wonderful, it’s a sweet rich roasted malt scent. Taste is rich, sharp and a bitter. It starts with a heavy body that goes down a bit sharp with a coffee like roasted malt taste coming out. As the finish comes on the roasted malt flavor builds and is followed by a nice even hop bitterness.

Draft at brewpub: Pours black with very thin offwhite cream head. Light malt and coffee/chocolate aroma. Flavor is very lightly malty and very lightly chocolate and coffee without any noticeable hops and a watery thin body. Seems to be poured on nitro. Very little carbonation, light on body light on flavor. What flavor there is is good but there is not much of it.

12 oz. bottle. Decent tight and tan head. A lot of sweet chocolate and fruit in the nose. The roasted chocolate/coffee flavor just doesn’t pack enough weight behind it to put in my upper tier of stouts. Dry stout? Nope.

Bottle. A dark brown in color with a tan head. The aroma was interesting - I dont recall having a stout that had such a presence of berries in the aroma which was quite nice. Also hints of roasted coffee and chocolate. The flavor ended up being the disapointment. It was immediately evident that it was too watery and a rubbing alcohol flavor was too evident overpowering what might have been better flavors. Maybe I can work up the courage to give it another shot later.

Pours black with garnet highlights and a creamy tan head. It has a cake-like aroma on the pour that reminds me of pumpkin or zucchini bread. Also present on the nose: coffee, toffee and the requisite roasted malts. Medium-bodied and slick it finishes lightly dry. The flavor is of dark roasted malts, molasses, light chocolate and coffee notes as well as a sweet fruity note in the background. Finishes clean and dry. While dry stouts aren’t my "bag", this one’s pretty nice.
