Taste is surprisingly like fine beef jerky, almost like a Rauchbier. Wow. A bit watery but very noteworthy. mreusch (730), Olathe, Kansas, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 16, 2006 Dark black pour, lightly scented with hints of coffee and roasted malt. Slight thin head that dissipated quickly. More carbonated than expected and agree with earlier posts that its a bit thin for a stout. Decent, but not a stout I’d go for again with so many other good choices. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 13, 2006 Bottle. Deep dark brown with a thick tan head. Roasted malt, caramel, molasses, toasted nuts, chocolate, cherries. The molasses wasn’t as prominent as I had hoped. Same with the flavor. Rather thin but rewarding. A commendable stout. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Oct 8, 2006 Pours deep black, darker even than coffee; dark head with no retention. Malty, nutty aroma with no appreciable hop bouquet. Roasted malt flavor; well balanced. Could do with more body. Fairly clean finish. Better than most beers of this style. jlruthven (137), Milledgeville, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 6, 2006 Got this in a pint glass from Tacomac in Peachtree City. Poured BEAUTIFULLY, solid black through and through, with a somewhat thin, almost cola-like head. Aroma is nearly burnt dark nut, with faint toffee. Flavor is nutty, with coffee, mocha, chocolate, and licorice (good call, tennisjoel); a little more carbonation than I like in a stout, but I’m willing to look past that. Not the best stout I’ve had, but its up there. tennisjoel (946), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 28, 2006 Roasted nut aroma. Licorice, coffee, and roasted nut flavor. A pretty average stout. Nothing worth noting or making a special trip to seek out. Someday I’d like to see a stout match Rogue Shakesphere, which is the top of the non imperial stouts, IMO. scluffman (14), Excelsior, Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 26, 2006 Very deep, dark black in color with a thin, tan head. Roasted, almost burnt malty aromas to go with the cocoa, cereal and coffee notes on the nose. Loads of sweet, creamy coffee flavors with noteworthy chocolate and toasted maltiness and just a bit of hoppiness at the back-end. Pleasingly creamy palate with modest carbonation and a slightly short-lived finish. Not over the top, like so many other stouts I’ve tried. All in all, a surprisingly approachable beer for a style I would rarely refer to as "approachable".
