Pours a dark brown, almost black body with a thin, brown, quickly dissipating head that leaves some swirling lace on the surface and soapy lace on the glass. Aroma is sweet and nutty. Almost smells like a brown ale rather than a dry stout. Some light notes of roast in the background, but mostly caramel. The flavor is definitely more along the lines of a dry stout, but still leans toward a brown at first. Nutty and caramel malts dominate throughout before a nice touch of roasts kick in at the end and through the finish. Some fruitiness and more of a burnt taste starts creeping in as this warms. The sweetness seems to be molasses and I’m not picking up much chocolate. Sweet and sticky aftertaste with a light burnt roast flavor. Palate is light to medium, very creamy and smooth, and slightly carbonated. Overall, an odd "dry stout." Has the typical characteristics of a dry stout...more in the finish...but tastes like a nut brown initially. Almost like an infusion of the styles. Not bad at all, just a little unexpected. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 27, 2009 Aroma is rich and smoky, and just a little sweet. It comes out of the bottle a dark, nearly opaque chocolaty brown and finishes the pour with a thick, fine-bubbled, light tan head. Flavor is rich if not too complex, rather hoppy, sweet but not cloying, with an undertone of molasses and hints of chocolate and caramel. Texture is very smooth and quite fizzy. ditmier (1110), Boise, Idaho, USA
