Commercial Description:
Fiercely local, drawing on indigenous ingredients from the hop fields of the Willamette Valley and the barley fields of the high Northwest desert. This pale ale is round and soft on the palate, finishing crisply, to capture the flavor and spirit of the Pacific Northwest in every pint and bottle.

Citrus permeates this beer, in a good way. Deep copper-orange color with thin head. Aroma has hints of orange. Delicate citrus flavor on top of hops and malt - the hops are more prominant than the malty taste. It has a mild taste for a pale ale, but very drinkable. Blue Heron is a satisfying pale ale.

Nice light amber color, small white head that lasted for a decent time and left a slight lace behind. The aroma was sweet and malty with a light fruit aroma and maybe a hint of caramel and faint light hops. The taste was malty with maybe a faint hint of caramel, light fruit taste hops and medium sweet. The after taste was malt and sweet with a finish that was fairly light and malty.Nice brew but nothing special, still worth trying though.

Clear copper color with some bubbles that rise to the top. A thin white head. Nice hoppy aroma. Nothing overpowering. Pretty decent flavor. Kind of thin but very hoppy and citrusy in the taste. Well balanced and would be a very nice Pale Ale if it was a little thicker.

This is one of my favorite beers yet I can't pin down what I love about it. In fact, it was this beer and Sinebrychoff Porter that got me interested in ratebeer.com this last summer. I've been holding off until recently on rating beers because I haven't been able to figure this one out. Nothing outstanding about Blue Heron, nothing to scoff at either. First tried it on the recommendation of a barkeep in Bozeman in '99 and it has been my favorite session beer ever since. Pours a fantastic translucent tangerine and gold with a fluffly, brainy head. Mild hop and citrus nose that refreshes and clears my senses. Each hop and malt balanced sip is greeted with this aromatic tease. Always better in the middle of the beer, but fine and proud character from start to finish. I find it to be less thin and watery than most APAs, with a more agreeable bitterness front to back. When living in MT, always kept at least six of these on hand. I am heavily biased, for whatever reason, but I love this beer.

Bottle, although a different bottle than the one on this site--mine had a nice, full color painting of a blue herron in a marsh. Lennie's favorite beer. Light amber color with hints of copper. Good head with starying power, no lace to mention. Gentle hops, but with crisp aroma. fruity aromas with hints of lemon. OK mouthfeel--mild bitterness, with a nice balance between hops and malt. Nice hop profile to it--just a nice beer.

Mostly clear and orange colored with a soft frothy head that seemed to last. Fresh and fruity nose. Nice texture, creamy and light. Crisp and fresh with aromatic hops. Fruity (grapefruit and tangerine) and a little spicy. Malts were slightly toasted. Very mild bitterness. Nicely balanced, clean and refreshing. As it warmed, it seemed to have a little yeasty thing going on, which was good. Overall, pretty good, but not as great as some make it to be. Cask at the brewery: Biscuity and cake-like with nice yeast flavors. Very floral hops. Mild bitterness. Pretty tasty.

a classic North West pale..brewed since 1984. Comes in the nice looking Bridgeport brown bottle..simple blue label. This is quite an attractive beer to look at//nice amber almosty reddish ale with a small off white head that dissapates to a good sized lacing. Smell is very attractive and well done good peppy hoppy aroma mixed with nice sweet malts very enjoyable. Nicelly balanced taste with the sweetness of the malts being neutralized by the good hopiness. Feekls pretty good and smooth on the palate..my one quibble is it is a touch too thin. Very drinkable session type brew.

Draft: Ok nose a little malt/ carmel. Clean orange color. Toasty malt/ sweet hop flavor. Clean finish. Nothing to wow you but very drinkable.
