tronraner (1905), Maryville, Tennessee, USA May 16, 2008 Bomber, thanks to gunhaver. Pours a hazy dark rust color with beige head. The aroma is fruity, especially orange and peach, with some bourbony vanilla and sweet caramel notes. The flavor is strong wood at the front, with some orange peel notes, toffee, caramel, and a pretty subtle vanilla hint. It dries out considerably, finishing woody and slightly ashy with a respectably bitter aftertaste. Aroma – Huge woody aroma, tons of malt and lots of fruit in the nose.
Appearance – Dark Amber in color, little to no head and clear.
Flavor – Woody, malty and huge barley wine flavor. Fruit essence in the flavor also.
Palate – Nice Mouthfeel, great texture with a dry finish.
Overall – This was a great beer for the day. Super woody this beer ages well. The Bourbon was subtle as the fruit and wood flavors where much stronger. A great winter warmer for sure.
jsh12bama (335), Alabama, USA May 10, 2008 Pours amber with thick off white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, and wood. Taste of toffee, vanilla, caramel, and has a smooth finish. Completely miss the bourbon flavor. Was expecting bourbon in the nose and in the taste, and not noticed at all. Still a good beer. hopdog (5525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA May 9, 2008 22oz bottle. Poured a deeper amberish / brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of wood, a little earthy, dark fruits, toffee, and some boubon. Tastes of boubon, vanilla, caramel, dark fruits, and oaky woodiness. Light alcohol in the finish. Its not an ’in your face’ barley wine or barrel aged beers, but it is quite drinkable and I did enjoy it. Oakes (8057), gone rambling, Vietnam May 8, 2008 Hazy medium amber colour. Big nose with a hint of bourbon, lots of fat toffee and caramel malts. Not getting much barrel on the palate, but given how good knucklhead can be with its rich malts, I’m not going to sweat it. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Apr 29, 2008 Bottle. If you hold this up to the light, it’s cherry red. I find the aroma sweet, but rich, almost candy-like. This drinks with a tart tanginess, like a sour apple almost, with a solid alcohol kick to the gullet in the finish. I don’t detect any hint that this was aged in bourbon barrels. (#3440, 4/29/2008) apshah99 (137), Portland, Oregon, USA Apr 22, 2008 Dark amber in color with thin bubbly light tan head. Hoppy aroma with barley and alcohol. Tastes of caramel and dark ripe fruit with aged oak and a bitter hoppy finish; I didn’t find much bourbon anywhere. Nice carbonation on the palate. Good, but I was expecting more. It is pretty reasonably priced though. cflores (6), USA does not count Apr 16, 2008 High fruit content due to the choice of quality hops. The vanilla and alch content derive from the aging in burban oak. a long body that ballences well with the full fruit hop that lingers for with a nice caramel ending. rather enjoyable for an american barley wine.
