| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Aug 18, 2008 Pours a clear yellow gold with a fizzy head that’s gone in a flash. Sweet malty aroma, with just a hint of floral and citrus hops. Flavor is much the same, sweet and malty, with just a hint of hop presence. Medium, well carbonated body. Refreshing, but not much else going on. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Aug 11, 2008 02-Mar-08 (12 oz bottle: Purchased 09-Nov-07 for $7.99/six-pack at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) Haymaker, thy middle name is Meek. Popping the cap releases only a soft whisper, and because of the bottle shape, the beer pours stealthily into the glass. The uninspiring nose is honey-like in its sweetness with a hint of grainy malts and no hops to speak of. On the palate, the beer is meek and uneventful, providing a very mildly bitter hop flavor at first, fading in the evolution to reveal a grainy malt finish. It’s also moderately sweet and shows a honey character throughout. Light-medium in body, softly carbonated, and gently bitter, this beer is smooth and easy drink, but also somewhat boring and unchallenging on the palate. As a result, the mouth begins to feel tired and stale after only ten minutes. Defined as "sunshine in a glass," the beer is medium golden in color and moderately hazy, but the one thing this beer really has going for it is the plethora of small-bubbled carbonation streams rising through the beer. The initial quarter-inch off-white head quietly settles to a thin layer, but is propped up by the steady carbonation. Haymaker could be a decent pale ale if the beer had a bit more gumption, but the flavor is pretty lackluster, and without any real semblance of a crisp, hop bite, the beer fails to even refresh the palate. The honey-like sweetness and flavor doesn’t help matters either. Not a beer I’d buy again. punkeedo (465), San Antonio, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 9, 2008 I can’t place it, but this beer reminds me strongly of another beer that I had probably 5 years ago. Attractive dark yellow color with a sturdy white head. Smells of wheat and lemon zest. Fairly complex, highly carbonated, good hops punch, which is quickly dissipated. Very nice beer. Fruity and different. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jul 16, 2008 This is just about this side of horrid and undrinkable. Pours much lighter than I expected, clear and golden almost pilsner like, with a lot of carbonation and a small ring of white bubbly foam. Has a strange fruity twang to it, but I do not believe that anything was added, but it is very light bodied and does not taste very good at all. Pershing (149), Garland, Texas, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jul 14, 2008 Not what I expected. Golden in color with a small head. Bland taste, the label should state wich hops are used because I could only detect a faint smell of them. GarrettB (494), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jul 12, 2008 The haymaker, presumably named after the wrestling move/punch, is anything but. The smell is sophisticated, not brutal, and the flavor bland, not a knockout. The clear, light gold brew is practically in a coma, sitting still in a complete torpor. The smell contains apple, cinnamon, candle wax, incense, old pipe tobacco and the distinct scent of a building that’s held a lot of smoking inhabitants. I’m surprised that I can’t taste or detect any hops, considering this is a "Pale Ale." The taste is distinguished by its mute blandness - a startling departure from the aroma’s winding and curious character. It supports itself with strong carbonation and texturing, but the flavor is reduced to little else than a simple wood pulp flavor. So maybe, in this instance, the haymaker reference is to a piece of farming equipment, which would rank about the same as this beer in excitement level.
