| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 9, 2004 2003 bottle: Dark mohogany color with a thick frothy cream-colored thinly-lacing head. Aroma is mostly dry with an earthy pine English hoppiness and some mild caramel malty sweetness. The nose seems to be confused though as the elements don’t quite mesh together for some reason. Body starts with some caramel sweetness on the tip of the tounge, turning slightly acidic toward a dry, yet sticky, bitter finish. Don’t taste much alcohol here, but this is really lacking balance and complexity and just seems to be quite bereft in what I expect from a barleywine. Drew (2410), Kent, Ohio, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Sep 20, 2004 2003 bottle #011. Aroma is cherries, plums, roasty malt - thick fat aroma, dust, alcohol, chocolate. Dark ruby red body, very little head, lacing is nothing but a red tint sliding down the sides of the glass. Taste is thick and vinous - very winey when paired with the strong sweet malts. Behind the fruit comes roast and chocolate, drying hops and a dash of alcohol. I'm left with the taste of a cherry charms blowpop sticky on the roof of my mouth. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

2003 edition, with jovial, beret-bedecked Fred Eckhardt raising a glass to us from the label.Appearance: in the light a clear, perfectly rich, bright garnet out, out of the glare, it approaches plum, with a terrifically plush, creamy, eggnog-colored head.
Aroma: potent and sweet, complex, awash with associations of dark fruits, cherries, grapes, but with a wicked, roasted kick. Deep, dark, divine.
Taste: fierce, but friendly, hops, big, matched well with lush, solid malt, mmm, tasty. Full-bodied, long, happy finish, with the alcohol not asserting itself immediately, but ringing in by 1/3 of the way through. Although, at "mere" 9.1%, it doesn’t rope-a-dope you like certain bodacious barleywines, Victory Old Horizontal, just of the top of my head...and that’s a good thing, for certain. A full-flavored, warmly textured, utterly delicious bw that caresses it’s way into your heart, rather than blundgeoning into your braincase.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 17, 2004 I have been waiting to get my hands on this brew for a while. I am happy to report this beer did not disappoint at all. Powerful, dark fruit aroma. Alcohol spice in the nose. Robust maltiness and well developed flavors. Somewhat cloying but still chewy and full of goodness. I expected this to be rated higher. Overall, a fantastic barley wine. IndianaRed (1562), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 16, 2004 Bottle</B Pours a clear red/amber with a medium light tan head. Very nice sticky lacing. Aroma is of apricots, prunes, apples, butterscotch and Brandy/alcohol in the background. Flavor is faint and plain. Malty, dark roast and woody. The ABV is bately noticeable and don’t notice much hops either. A softy easy feel that goes down easy. A simple, somewhat boring BW but plain and easy to drink. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 9, 2004 On tap at BridgePort, sampled 4 August 2004. This was the cask-conditioned version. Deep red body with a thin cream-colored head. Dark fruit aroma with caramel and, yes, alcohol. Bourbon was apparent yet not too aggressive in the flavor, complemented by caramelized malts, brown sugar, and alcohol. Not very complex, reminiscent of a few American versions of the "wee heavy" style. Hops were subdued. Average to below-average fare for a barleywine. Vac (2394), San Diego, California, USA
