amber, good head, sweet carmel aroma with a nice dose of floral hops, good malt base with lots of flavoring hops covering up and stone carmel character, lingering bitter finish

A very decent, malty, but well-hopped ale. Nice malt profile. I always liked the gimmick of stone brewing. A medium-bodied, inexpensive, cool and gimicky delight... in it's day. Time to retire this one, guys jeffc666 (1895), Fairfax, Virginia, USA

I had always been leery of it, typically gimmick beers suck. Well it turned out to be OK, not great but OK. Decent hoppy flavors with good malt body and carmelly flavors. I have not seen it in years and asume that it is gone forever. Holdwine (909), Beertimore, Maryland, USA

If you get past the hype of an "old technique" you get to taste a truly unique ale> Don't know if it is the brewer (now gone from Frederick) or the hot stones. Yes, there is a delicious toffee sweetness to this ale. Suttree (2742), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 2, 2001 This is an ale brewed differently from any you’ve tried before. The label claims it to be a “resurrection of an early brewing technique used in the days before iron kettles.” Super-heated stones are dropped into the wort, as they were when wooden vessels could not be heated by fire. The hot stones carmelize sugars and release toffee-like flavors into the beer. The resulting brew resembles a pale ale, possibly even an IPA, as it is out of balance toward hops rather than malt. Crisp and delicious. Brent (116), Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 12, 2001 This beer is worth trying just for the ad hype alone. Great label showing a devil-cat jumping over a volcano. According to the bottle, in ancient times before the use of metal kettles to brew beer, hot rocks were dropped into the wort to heat it and caramelize the sugars, and this beer revives the practice. Nice, light hoppy aroma, with a front well balance between sweet and hoppy. The middle was quick and the end clean, with a delayed hoppyness kicking in. Fairly assertive, almost too much so.
