Commercial Description:
Our biggest beer by far, Old No. 23 revives an English farmhouse brewery tradition of making a strong ale to set aside for special occasions. Our version, while tedious and time-consuming to brew, rewards the connoisseur with an ale that has the depth and complexity of a good brandy or single malt scotch. Massive quantities of malt and hops, a long aging time and limited availability make this a special ale worthy of its reputation.

Bottle. Moderate notes of dark bread, cookie and orange for the malt and hops, light leather and earth for the yeast, and hints of medicine and a faint boozy note. Head is small, off white, almost no lacing, has good legs and is fully diminishing. Color is a flat hazy pale brown, with small dark particles. Flavor is moderately sweet and lightly acidic to start, and is lightly sweet and moderately acidic and bitter in the long finish. Palate is medium to full, almost syrupy, has a lively carbonation and finishes astringent and chewy/sticky. A decent Barley Wine but a bit out of balance.

Crushed with Jakebra at BSAF. Solid barley wine. Excellent. Hoppy, malty, awesomey. Dig it. Want some more. Should be rated higher.

This was very enjoyable. Pours a clear deep ruby red with a small head that sticks around and leaves no lace. The aroma is mildly hoppy with some good sweet malty and spicy notes. The flavor follows this has a very good sweet flavor of cherries and licorice but is balanced out well with spicy and piney hops, Pretty nice.

12oz. bottle, notched 2007, and thanks to BlackForestCO for yet another great bonus! Pours a slightly hazy orange amber with a choppy one finger off-white head, moderate retention and lacing. Aroma is nice and malty, with toffee, caramel, candied dark fruits, and some brown sugar. Flavor is more sweetness, with candied fruits and caramel, almost sugary but not quite there. Palate is a bit thin, with the sweetness sticking around. Thanks Jake, you rock!

12oz 2005 Vintage via trade with hopdog. Thanks Steve. Pours a think cloudy cauldron of brownish dirty looking water. Nose is sweet with sherry notes. Taste is sweet almost cloyingly sweet with some strange background notes. Overall I have to say this is good, but a bit strange, and slightly off.

750ml bottle-pours an off white bubbly head and murky orange/amber color. Aroma is medium malt-caramel/molasses/brown sugar, pine hops. Taste is medium malt-caramel/molasses/brown sugar, pine/resin hops and some lemon, some alcohol. Nice sipping. Thanks bitterbill & jwc215 for trading this.

Pours brown with a thin white head. Smells of sweet malt, dark fruit, some spice. Tastes very syruppy sweet with some dark fruit on the finish.
