Crosling (1660), Loveland, Colorado, USA Jun 29, 2008 Dark brown color with a white head that quickly diminishes into a small collar. Very faint aromatics overall, a very light touch of malt character (some smoke, and a very light hint of chocolate and roast. Thin bodied beer. Flavor is also very muted, with some light notes of rubber, a touch of smoke, some fruit and some roast. I was expecting more from such a high quality brewer.
GregClow (2351), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 7, 2008 Bottle shared with blankboy, HogTownHarry, jerc & mabel - courtesy of blankboy. Dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, slightly toasted, with a bit of smoke. Medium bodied. Nice flavour - mellow roasted malt, faint smoke, notes of coffee and cocoa. I wouldn’t complain if there was a bit more smokiness, but still, it’s a nice little porter. acrdz (4406), Boulder, Colorado, USA Sep 27, 2008 Bottle, probably a little old, maybe six months. Solid dark brown body, some lighter hues on the sides of the glass but mostly opaque. Nose is muted, some sort of dry crackers and malted milk balls, some roast and chocolate but fairly light, lacking complexity and basically coming across as stale and washed out with age. Flavor is similar, but does have more of a sweetened amaretto and vanilla note, along with the distinct flavor of white chocolate. Astringency is noticed on the back, body is medium to light, and overall it comes across as stale, faded and weak. Without any glaring flaws, but still it seems just too faded. Smoke? Barely noticeable, but there, mostly on the back, mixed in with that dominant white chocolate flavor. This is definitely more of a porter with some smoke than a smoked porter. blankboy (2627), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 24, 2008 My bottle (22oz) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jerc & mabel -- courtesy of Kevin. Pours a very deep amber-brown with an average size somewhat-lasting creamy tan head. Nice aroma of roasted malt, light smoke, light chocolate and a hint of hops. Malty flavour along with some dark chocolate, dark fruit, a bit of smoke and a somewhat dry and bitter finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Average bodied. This was better then I expected and I really liked it -- I could happily drink a whole bomber of this. jerc (3217), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 23, 2008 2008-09-17. Black body with a smallish tan head that fades. (3+) Moderately smoky aroma is very lightly ashen with hints of cocoa. (6+) I’m about to pronounce the smoke restrained with in becomes more pronounced. Its still mild but its just enough to put me off a bit, light ashy notes lead to cocoa-mocha accented malt base. (6+) Average to thin bodied palate. Decent, but not to my tastes. Bottle shared by Blankboy
HogTownHarry (3286), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Sep 21, 2008 22oz bottled shared by blankboy with me, GregClow, jerc and mabel. Dig that "keep on truckin" font on the label. Medium-dark ruby-brown pour with a smallish creamy-frothy light brown head. Pleasant light roast coffee bean malt aroma definite iodine/peat bite to it. The taste - mostly like a brown ale (not too porter-ish), nice and nutty/roasty, but not a lot of smoke - less than in the nose - just a vague woodsmoke (or even Liquid Smoke) tang to it. The body seemed a bit wan, and the carbonation was too prominent for a porter, but the finish, while too quick, was clean and lightly roasty - decent enough, not great though.
