Pours oily and inky black. The nose has lots of molasses and dark berry notes. Very mellow and easily drinkable blend of roasted grains with a slight earthy hop note in the flavor. Quite full bodied with low carbonation. It drank like I’d imagine a real ale in England would drink. A real treat for sure. wetherel (1628), Encinitas, California, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 28, 2009 Thanks to Mike for sharing this gem! Poured near black with a fine cap of dark brown head. The aroma picked up rich dark chocolates, molasses, and treacle with a warm, roasty imprint.. smelled like it had a little age to it (maybe slight oxidation?). The flavor department is really where this struck gold.. coffee and lesser dark chocolate provided most of the base with oak and vanilla laced throughout.. toasty with a long, succulent finish. Heavier-bodied with a little bit of sourness (oak-inspired) that helped out on the palate.. a bit hot, but well-received. WeeHeavySD (2990), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA

Pousr blackish with a tan ring. Nose is sweet coffee. And some pumpernickle bread, if you haven’t try it and expand the color spectrum of your bread. Taste is sweet and rich and smoky, rich and nice. Yes this is good, good enough for people to recognize broad ripple with some quality. StFun (535), Indiana, USA

A word up front, let this one warm up, it adds complexity and depth. Very nice brew. Pours an excellent looking rich black color, with a tan head. Aroma has some licorice, bakers chocolate and some real earth notes to it. Flavor is burnt chocolate and roasted grains, side by side with candied sugar, backed by dark fruits. Nice touch of hops and dough. Really starts to develop more character as it warms. Very creamy mouthfeel. stefanje (944), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 8, 2009 Served from cask at the brewpub. Opaque black with a tan head. Sweet chocolate aroma. Creamy, very mellow cask carbonation. Lots of roasty chocolate coffee flavors. Smooth and quite creamy, almost lactic. A tad undercarbonated, but thats cask I guess. The full on taste really redeems it. Excellent. Lagunitasfan (443), San Diego, California, USA
