Pours a hazy dark copper brown with an indestructible tan head of tightly packed bubbles. Aroma reveals a distinct American hop presence and a fair doses of malt. Flavor is hop up front and well-balanced by sweet malt, accompanied by a lightly dry grain flavor. Certainly on the bitter side for a brown ale, so it’s appropriate that they have dubbed this an "American brown ale" to distinguish it from its more traditional English counterpart. Still, this American experiment does not stray too far from its original roots and it works better than I thought it would based on its commercial description and its liberal (for a brown) use of hops. Good stuff. DrnkMcDermott (1861), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 21, 2006 Cask sampler at Broad Ripple. Well, their porter seemed more like a stout, and this semelleed more like a porter. Go fig. So a mellow roasty porter smell from a creamy thick head. First thing I taste is a good velvety cask mouthfeel. Deep mahogany brown color. Seems to be stronger than the 4.7% abv listed. KUEric (632), Chevy Chase, Maryland, USA

A well balanced hop-malt flavor and aroma. But the flavor almost had a APA flavor to it. Loved the malt flavoring here. IPAndy (120), minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jul 22, 2006 From cask at the brewpub. Soapy citrus aroma. Dark red appearance, no head. Flavor is somewhat fruity (kind of British pale ale) and a little soapy, little spicy. Finish is sour, no carbonation (too little even considering it is from the cask). I wonder if I got a bad pint, because I’ve had it before (2 years ago maybe) and I remember it as being better. jahughey (65), Franklin, Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 15, 2005 Think more flavorful, fresher version of Pete’s Wicked. Spicy hop, yet bready, chocolate malt aroma. Fairly dry but substantial maltiness, with hop flavor more dominant. Pete needs to quit counting $ and kick the recipe up to this. Good stuff. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 16, 2004 From a sampler: This ale is a very dark brown color with a medium thick beige head. Thin and solid lacing. The aroma is mildly malty with some brown sugar and caramel. Full-bodied for a Brown Ale, with a surprisingly smooth mixture of malt, caramel, nuts and toffee. The finish is smooth as well making this a pretty good session ale.
