Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Introduced as: "Brøckhouse Brygmesterens Bryg nr. 9" at The Copenhagen Beer Festival 2007

English: Brøckhouse Draupnir is a clear and light golden top fermented beer with a dense white head. It is brewed with pale, ale, Münchner and wheat malt which give a fresh and light beer with a smooth malt sweetness. The beer is moderately hopped with the English Challenger and spiced with honey, pine needles and sloe. The honey contributes to the light sweetness and together with the sloe gives the English ale yeast a pleasant fruit like aroma. The pine needles balances the sweetness with a distinct bitterness which makes up for the modest dose of bittering hops. Brøckhouse has not tried to copy the beer the vikings drank, but has brewed a modern viking beer with inspiration from the ingredients used in the viking era. This includes pine needles, honey and sloe. IT fits most Danish summer dishes from the grill or salat bar. Should be served at 8-10 degrees celsius.

Sadly, a disappointment. I really want to like Brøckhouse beers, since they were one of the pioneers of the Danish microbrew miracle in recent years. This one is thin, one-dimensional, tastes strongly of tea. Not a bad beer, you understand, just disappointing.

Bottle from Wine and Cheese. Pours light amber with a frothy 3-finger off-white head. Aroma is rather peachy. Medium minus body with mild carbonation. Flavor of something like plum, pine and caramel. It’s lightly sweet, and fairly balanced. Quite different ale. I’m finding it quite pleasant.

Appearance: Pours a clear, amber-gold body with a thin layer of white fizz. Smell: Toasty pale maltiness garnished with a few sloe berries, pine needles, and artfully-placed splotches of clover honey. Taste: Sweetish pale malts with a bit of toastiness and caramel. Added honey sweetness. Fruity touch of sloe (your roll) berry. Mild hint of garden-variety pine. Vague spiciness. Not really picking up much in the way of hops or bitterness. Drying finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-low carbonation. Fairly smooth mouthfeel. Drinkability: A tasty, enjoyable beer, though, with the brewery long gone, does it really even matter?
