Commercial Description:
Breukelen Abbey Ale a winter seasonal beer, is brewed in the style made famous by the monastery breweries of Belgium. Abbey is made with a blend of nine European malts, and fermented with an imported Belgian yeast. Abbey is a traditionally brewed Belgian "dubbel," a strong russet-brown ale with a spicy aroma reminiscent of chocolate, cloves, dates and figs. It contains one surprising ingredient, sugar. Many Belgian beers are brewed with a type of caramelized rock candy called candii sugar. For Breukelen Abbey Ale, we use raw Dominican sugar from the nearby Domino sugar refinery.

Typica dubbel look with a noice fluffy head, slowly diminishing, Fruitier type dubbel with peachy hints, some green apple, lots of yeast, and a bit of alcohol in the aftertaste.

On tap at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur, GA: Hazy copper ruby brown color with a frothy light tan head with nice thin lacing. Bready Belgian yeasty aroma has a sweet grainy caramel malt presence and good authenticity. Starts with a semi-sweet earthy maltiness turning much drier toward a warming toffee finish. Nice authenticity and balance, but could hide the alcohol better for the amount there is.

On tap at Summit Tavern in Atlanta. Clear brown color with an average sized white head. Aroma comes on as it warms providing some malt and fruitiness. Although the palate isn’t qite as rich and chewy as I like my Dubbels to be, this provides a nice easy drinking brew that delivers some nice malt and fruit flavors on a palate that is light and never heavy. Smooth and very drinkable.

On draft at Summit in Atlanta. I really enjoyed this beer. Reddish/amber color with a sweet nose, this is a tasty brew. The flavor is fruity/caramelly.

Draft at The County Grill on 2-19-05. Awesome that I found this there! Copper body with a small creamy white head. Nose is sweet with candy sugar, light spices, flowers and ripe fruits. Taste was nice! Sweet malts, some spiciness, more floral notes, hints of cookies, ripe fruit, and some bubblegummy notes. Full bodied with moderate carbonation feel. Finish is more fruit and sweet notes, light flowery notes, caramel, and bubblegum. Nice beer!

Had this one on draft at Smokin Joe’s in Pittsburgh. It poured a caramel color with a small tan head. The aroma was sweet molasses and caramel. The flavor was sweet, sugary, and had some molasses, caramel and light fruit. A subdued hop presence was in the background. The mouthfeel was reasonably thick. Reminded me very strongly of Maredsous Double.

Draft. Medium brown/red body with a small but creamy off-white head. Sour yeast aroma with some light fruits and a bit of real sugar. Perhaps some buble gum as well. As expected; a yeast heavy flavor with a moderate sweetness and building acidity to keep things in check. Bitterness is very low but pleasant. Medium body with a slick mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. The bottom line is: good, drinkable and fun...but not as complex as I was hoping for...the yeast is a bit heavy handed for my tastes as well.
