Commercial Description:
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

I give this massive bonus points for being widely available when this could easily earn the reputation of say a Dark Lord if it were a limited release. With that said, I am not too impressed. Too boozy fresh and not much in the way of anything distinguishing it from most other solid RIS.

2008 Bottle - Thanks CaptainCougar! - Pours a thick black with a large tan head..aroma is dark and sweet molassas malt, coffee...flavour expounds on the bitter chocolate aspect present in most Imperials, vanilla and a bit of charred wood as well...It has that lactic end on it that I don’t care much for, but is still darn fine...

Bottle. Thanks MixinNixon!!! Pours a black color with a nice tan head. Aroma: Sweet, malty, somewhat alcoholic. Flavor: Tastes very chocolatey, with just a tad of hops and a slight bitterness in the finish.

Mixed feelings on this beer every time I drink it, and I think this rating reflects my ambiguity towards it. Sometimes it’s simply great; mellow, restrained and delicious. Sometimes it’s too sweet and overly alcoholic. I also made the mistake of drinking BCS next to a Founder’s Breakfast Stout, which makes it seem thin and flavorless. Not a bad beer by any means, but I wonder about consistency or my palate on this one. I’ve got some to age and rerate in a while.

Reminds me a lot of Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast without as much coffee notes. Pours pitch black with a thin head. Disappointing lacing. Alcohol was masked too well as it sneaks up on you quickly. Good stuff.

Bottled 355ml. 10.6 ABV. Winter 06/07. Courtesy of DuffMan. Appearance: It pours a pitch black beer with a small full beige head. Beautiful delicate lacework. Aroma: Sweet. Dark chocolate, plums, molasses, vanilla, wood, blue cheese, ginger, alcohol and niaouli honey appearing. Most inviting. Flavor and palate: Wonderfully pleasant and incredibly subtle. Strong chocolate notes accompanied by vanilla, rum, brown sugar, licorice, ginger, plums and wood. The alcohol is very well hidden. Sweet. Moderate carbonation. Extremely smooth. A tad salty. Some pepper showing up with the swallow. Excellent long strong finish reminiscent of dark chocolate, plums and heather. Overall impression: A top notch Imperial Stout. Flawless. I reveled in every sip. The aroma is slightly inferior to the flavor. Thanks a lot DuffMan!

Bottle. Pours pitch black with very thin tan head. Aroma is chocolate, alcohol, and malt. Very smooth taste even though it is bitter. Roasted malt, chocolate, anise. Thinner on the palate than you would think, alcohol is apparanent, warms as it goes down. Damn good.

Bottle thanks to BlackForestCO. Pours black thin yet lasting, tan head. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, roast, licorice and some dark fruit notes as well. Flavors of sweet malts, roasted malts, chocolate, more licorice. Fairly bitter finish, with a nice warming feel. Palate is rich and smooth. Thanks again Jake.
