Commercial Description:
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

Bottle. Pours very dark. Nice tan head. Aroma was malty with a nice hit of chocolate. Taste is chocolate and a touch of coffee, can taste the high ABV too. Nice.

12oz bottle, courtesy of Mr. Wolf. Dark black, it’s as black as something really black, had a nice chocolate head. Big chocolate aroma. Somewhat bitter chocolate flavor, some coffee flavor as well. Not bad.

Very tasty and smooth. Strong flavors of coffee and chocolate. Sampled on draft at the Creative Loafing Beerfest 2008. Yum!

Rich roasted aroma. Thick, but not as thick as might be expected for the style. It doesn’t seem as heavy as, say, Old Rasputin. Very noticeable alcohol presence asserts itself midway. Has all the rich, creamy, roasted stuff going on as you might expect, but not as much as most chocolate or Imperial stouts.

A thick, dark pour with the viscosity of motor oil. A deep and delicious coffee aroma with multiple complex notes. In the mouth the texture was rich, but truly lacked definition. I wasn’t sure where the wonderful coffee or chocloate aroma went. The finish was incredibly disappointing. This beer, which seemingly had been given so much attention from the folks at BB, left me thoroughly disappointed. For this style of beer, this is remarkably unremarkable. After drinking the entire 6-pack I can say that this is definitely not a 4.0+ beer.

Bottle courtesy of my Secret Santa. Pours black with a frothy brown head. Smells predominantly of roasted coffee. Tastes of toasted malts, dark cocoa, ash, slight raisin, and faint vanilla. Permeates alcohol as it warms. Well balanced and highly drinkable.
