Pours black with fluffy tan head, leaves great lacing behind. Nicely carbonated on the tongue with a boozy bitter chocolate finish. Would drink again! TearsforBeers (173), Ohio, USA

07-08 bottle
Pours a very thick opaque black with about a centimeter of disappearing chocolate colored head and lingering lacing.
Smells alcoholic, sweet, dark fruits, baking chocolate
Flavor is strong - sweet malts up front, with chocolate bitterness, some dark fruits, lingering hop/chocolate bitterness and smoke
palate - thick and boozy
This is a very good stout, but the alcohol is rather more apparent and hot than would be ideal. MishkinBeer (65), , New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 18, 2008 Flavors of chocolate and mocha combine in this completely opaque, black stout. A soothing smokiness emerges after having a couple sips. Alcohol flavor is detectable - probably not too surprising given the high percentage. The aroma evokes chocolate of course, but also has a burnt coffee fragrance. The taste is sweet and the texture is thick with just a little carbonation. The finish is delectably smooth. dnlsartin (71), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 18, 2008 A dark, smooth pour. Aroma of hazelnut and alcohol. Smooth and creamy with a balance of dark chocolate, licorice, and coffee notes. Alcohol not overwhelming. An ideal imperial style. KingofCastle (202), London, Ontario, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 18, 2008 bottle I am suprised to see it is so high an alcohol content. I guess it speaks to the high quality of this beer. Still the chocolate and high alcohol do overwhelm so I have to say that I still prefer Youngs Double Chocolate Stout. Furthermore I will still prefer BEAMISH for the perfecti marriage of flavour and drinkability. Why this is 99th percentile is beyond me. Yes, it is a high quality beer but can you drink 3 of these? Youngs and BEAMISH have so much more value based on their drinkability. DalzAle (511), Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 17, 2008 12 oz. bottle received via a trade with Beerlando. Poured midnight black with a 1 inch head into a pint glass. Smell of alcohol and chocolate chip cookies. Initial flavor of chocolate with a slight smoky aftertaste. As time has passed, aromas and flavors are becoming more apparent and enticing. Very good beer, try to get via trade if not available locally. xibalba89 (147), New York, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 17, 2008 Pour black with a thick head. Aroma has lots of black malt and bitter hops. Flavor is extremely bitter maybe too much so. Theres the usual chocolate and such here, but the bitterness dominates thoroughly. A good beer but not my favorite stout. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 16, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours jet black with a nice tan head with decent lacing. Smells of bittersweet chocolate and burnt malt and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is more bittersweet chocolate and bold black coffee. The taste of alcohol sneaks through but does not get in the way. Very thick on the mouth. This certainly makes for a good warm-up in the winter. One of my favorite stouts.
