| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Nov 6, 2009 Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Snifter glass. The bottle reads "Limited Bottling - Winter 09-10" and I sampled it on 11-4-2009.
Appearance: The color is jet black and definitely opaque. It raises a tall tan head that is thick, creamy and hangs on very well. It slowly fades down to a tight cap of foam that makes lots of splotchy lacing on the glass.
Smell: For a big 10% beer there is very little suggestion of its alcoholic strength. I get more roasted barley and grain brown sugar and molasses. Light notes of alcohol just seek into the background.
Taste/Palate: I’m hit with a big rich sweetness up front with notes caramel, brown sugar and molasses. Next comes gooey dark bitter chocolate brownies and deep roasted barley and grain notes. Solid herbal/leafy hops finishes thing of along with a gentle warming alcohol. The palate has a good full body with a slick texture and just enough carbonation to keep things from getting cloying or to syrupy.
Notes: This is a truly outstanding BIG beer. I wish I had some really good plain New York cheese cake with fresh red raspberries to pair with this wonderful beer. Well, for tonight this beer is its own dessert.

A small, but creamy head develops towards the end of the pour and sticks around. The aroma is a bit muted, but notes of butterscotch and toffee are detectable. Nothing aggressive in the flavor either; this is good as big beers are often unbalanced. Flavors tend to assert themselves all at once; toasty and crystal malts dominate but hints of either hop or kilned bitterness finishes rather nicely. Big, slick body but quite drinkable for the style. The significant alcohol makes itself known before the glass is finished. Overall, a quite restrained Imperial Stout that suits those of us who don’t care for drinking beers that could serve as pancake syrup. fata2683 (921), Panama City, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 23, 2009 bottle, pours pitch black with a tall dark tan head. Aroma is strong chocolate and alcohol with some black patent malt. Sweet chocolate and burnt sugar turn into a bitter black malt finish with a lingering cocoa nib and light alcohol note. crajun (98), , Texas, USA

This beer is exactly what it says it is: Black pour; tan head; roasted malted aroma and taste- I don’t detect much chocolate (good thing) in the taste - malty and bitter hops (not too much) with a toasted/burnt taste.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 22, 2009 Bottle. Pitch black with a medium foamy mocha head. Above average retention and beautiful lacing. Aroma is vanilla, chocolate, roasted malts, hazelnuts, danish pastry and sugar. Flavor is not as rich as expected, slightly metallic with roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, alcohol and a mildly bitter finish with some tartness. Oily mouthfeel. beernovice39 (305), South Carolina, USA

Jet black syrup like pour, little to no head. Smell of roasty malts. Very slick oily feel. Wonderful taste, not much on the chocolate though. Booze is hidden in flavor, great brew! jeremytoni (1122), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA

As with all great imperial stouts, there is a great malt / hop balance. I’m detecting: caramel, bread, chocolate, coffee, and roasty flavors. If it wasn’t for the heavy alcohol on the aroma, this might have ended up at the very top of my list. GranvilleTim (520), Granville, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 21, 2009 Deep black pour with a thick brown head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol. Taste is roasted malt, semi-sweet chocolate, and alcohol. Finished dry at the end. Nice lacing. The head went down , but not away. The aroma intensified as it warmed, bringing out the aroma of dark fruit along with more of the alcohol.
