HopheadHans (753), Bay Area, California, USA Aug 14, 2009 Bottle. Pours with a dark brown color and fairly smallish head. Flavor and aroma is dominated by caramel togther with some dough. Not as intense as I expected rather muted and more of a food beer. marcus (1821), Sacramento, California, USA Jun 26, 2009 This dark brown ale poured with a huge fluffy biege head and an aroma of bread and toffee. The flavor is heavily spiced caramel malt with a bit of chocolate, made lively by a large dose of carbonation. bhensonb (4182), Woodland, California, USA Jun 25, 2009 Bottle from Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa. Dark brown ruby color with a frothy beige head. Aroma is mixed chocolate/caramel. Medium plus body with really frothy carbonation. Flavor is pretty much chocolate. Oh there’s caramel and strange spicey stuff, and hop notes, but it’s up front chocolate. Not sayin it’s the best ever, but it’s really good! nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Jun 11, 2009 Bottle from City Beer in SF. Dark purplish-brown color with an off-white head. Aroma of raisin, malt, Belgian yeast, a little roast, and mild hops. Flavor is malty with spices, dark fruit (raisin mostly), and grassy hops. Body medium. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA May 14, 2009 750mL bottle, no date--picked up at Bottle Barn for $8.49. Was surprised and excited to see this--apparently its seeing mass distribution now. The cork came out with a substantial pop, but (hooray) no overflowing. Clear deep dark copper with a two finger beige head, fair retention. Seems pretty carbonated as with agitation the head rises to a couple fingers rather quickly. Belgian yeast and ripe bananas up front and unsweetened cocoa, with some not-so-sweet fig and raisin notes. Dark candi sugar and scorched caramel are faint, but present. The flavor adds a slight fruity tang, and again isn’t too sweet at all, and dries out by the finish. Bitterness is around a 2. High carbonation is lessened by constant swirling amid a medium body. Pretty tasty brew. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Mar 1, 2009 Bottle at Bouchon Bakery. Deep brown beer with a thick pillowy tan head. Aroma is quite lovely. Rich plummy malts with a lightly bready/toasty back note and a kiss of light spiciness. Like the Local 2, the beer has a lot of nice malty components while still coming out quite dry. Lightly dusty on the back of the palate with a softly earthy cocoaish note. Light chocolate and toast nuts. There is also a nice hint of cobwebby/flinty minerality that I find quite appealing. Great balance and really a top-notch brew. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Feb 8, 2009 Bottle at Bouchon Bakery, $22. I’d be more inclined to call this a Dubbel than a Belgian Ale. Very dry malt aroma, nutty, wheaty, weizenbock like. Sparkly carbonation, with a nutty flavor, notes of caramel and yeast. Again, quite dry, with a bit of a heavy-handed carbonation. Lots of peanut notes in both aroma and flavor. Fairly well balanced. The beer worked with the meal quite well. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Feb 3, 2009 Bottle shared by Jimmack. Pours a nice slightly hazy amber-brosn with a high belgian carbonation and a nice fluffy off white head. Aroma is nutty belgian yeasty phenolic with spice- herbs and earthy dirty character. Goof nutty earthy maltiness, with phenolic and fruity belgian yeast some dark toasted and charred malts, almsot chocolate character with a nice herbal dry earthy finish- smooth doughy and light finish.
