Commercial Description:
Since ancient times, people have complained that “things were better in the old days”. In the 1840’s, English brewers became nostalgic for beers of the previous century, strong dark ales with robust flavors. Thus the term “old ale” was born and these beers were re-popularized. Our Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale brings back the grand old style. It’s brewed with flavorful English Maris Otter malt with a dash of equally flavorful raw demerara sugar from Malawi. Challenger and East Kent Golding hops give the beer appetizing earthy/fruity aromatics. The bitterness is crisp, balancing a solid center of orangey fruit with caramel and chocolate notes. It dries into the finish, leaving a warm glow of malt. Perhaps some things really were better in the old days. Enjoy Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale with steaks, burgers, roast beef, lamb chops, Mexican mole and black bean sauces and hard cow’s-milk cheeses. Malts: British Maris Otter, Crystal, and Chocolate malts Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi Hops: Willamette, East Kent Golding, Challenger O.G.: 19° Plato (1076) ABV: 8.2%

On tap. Poured a murky deep brown color with a thin, broken off-white head. The aroma was mild, with mostly sweet malts and some slightly fruity notes. The taste has some hops up front, but they mellow out after a bit. The rest is mostly caramel, with some almost tannic notes on the finish. Pretty nice.

Draught at Tylers Carborro. Pours a dark ruby copper with a thin light tan head. The nose was sweet, malty, mildly fruity, chewy caramel. Flavor is malty, chewy, raisiny, some caramel, lightly peaty, some tobacco, leafy hops. Similar to a Scotch Ale. Palate is a tad thin, could be more dextrinous. Crisp.

Draftr at Dilly Deli. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Medium toasted malt and complex aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced bittersweet flavor and medium toasted bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Soilid Drinkable beer.

On tap at Bocktown. A little thin and weak for an old ale. Aroma was decent. Very boozy with some caramel and roasted malt. Pour was a thin medium brown with no bubbles or head. Taste was mostly roasted malt with a caramel backbone. There is a slight earthiness in the sinuses after the swallow, but the mouthfeel is very thin (decent carbonation, though). Not a terrible beer, but as old ales go a little boring.

Sampled at Tyler’s, Durham, along with durhambeer. Body looks more like a thin brown, as if someone faked us out with Newcastle. Very thin carbonation. Nose is more floral and hoppy than expected. Slightly thin body, malt forward as expected but lacking much depth or character.
