Commercial Description:
Since ancient times, people have complained that “things were better in the old days”. In the 1840’s, English brewers became nostalgic for beers of the previous century, strong dark ales with robust flavors. Thus the term “old ale” was born and these beers were re-popularized. Our Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale brings back the grand old style. It’s brewed with flavorful English Maris Otter malt with a dash of equally flavorful raw demerara sugar from Malawi. Challenger and East Kent Golding hops give the beer appetizing earthy/fruity aromatics. The bitterness is crisp, balancing a solid center of orangey fruit with caramel and chocolate notes. It dries into the finish, leaving a warm glow of malt. Perhaps some things really were better in the old days. Enjoy Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale with steaks, burgers, roast beef, lamb chops, Mexican mole and black bean sauces and hard cow’s-milk cheeses. Malts: British Maris Otter, Crystal, and Chocolate malts Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi Hops: Willamette, East Kent Golding, Challenger O.G.: 19° Plato (1076) ABV: 8.2%

Sampled at Tyler’s in Durham. Clear dark brown with reddish tint. Not a whole lot going on here. Sweet, malty... um.... I got nothing else. No real dusty/earthy/woody notes that I want in an old ale. Not offensive at all, but not interesting, either. Simply boring.

On tap at the Bocktown, nice place. Mild milky aroma. Darker brown clear. Stronger alky initial taste. Piercing at times to the palate. Big bitter back of throat alky building sensation. Barely any carbonation. Taste is a little overboard for a lager lover. Bitter lingering finish. Sometimes this stuff gets in yer face.

Draft at McGregor’s. Boozy, malty palate. Very nice looking dark and reddish. Faint aroma that was a bit fruity. Nice after dinner beer.

In short: A sugary (brown sugar) and earthy/dirty mess. Not good at all.
How: Tap at Ebenezer’s (Maine)
The look: Clear dark ruby body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose of old dusty couch that hasn’t been used for years (no kidding). Taste is very dirty/earthy. Earthy malts, toasted bread dropped on a dirty floor, burnt brown sugar. Hops missing in action. All I could get from this mess was sweetness, dirt and dust. Not really offensive but not something I want to have ever again. Brooklyn Brewery wanted to make a Blunderbuss Old Ale but all they made is a Blunder.

Orlando, Fl. - Rossi’s Pizza - on tap. Dark copper pour with a light white head. Brief toffee aroma with hints of molasses. Flavor is sweet with toffee accents, some caramel, hint of molasses and maple syrup and a boozy finish. Mouthfeel is just tad thin for the style.

12oz (requested half-pour) at Mr. Pickwicks Pub. Poured a rather clear tawny brown with thin off-white head that receded quickly. Aromas of toasted nuts, malted grains, light molasses, and something like dry-rotting wood (in a nice way). Flavors focused on the malted grain and toasty nuts plus some dark caramel notes and a little sweet-bitter finish. The finish is long and stuck with me even after two other beers and french fries. I could still pull up the finish a half hour later. And oh, yeh...that’s a good thing!

Draft at The Ravenous Pig. Pours clear and dark copper in color. Virtually no head or lacing showed, which was a bit of a surprise. The aroma shows notes of black cherry, caramel, hazelnut liquor, and vanilla, with a warm, fruity, sherry-like overtone. Flavors include dark fruits, oaky sherry, and big vanilla. Medium-plus on the palate, but far from lush, the mouthfeel is a bit under carbonated and overly alcoholic. Searing heat grows on the finish. I’m not a big fan.
