Nose is very slight, perhaps one of dark malts. I was a little surprised by the flavor of this example. Previous Old Ales (such as Theakson’s Old Peculiar) were much more malt and less roasty than this one. However, this difference isn’t necessarily a detriment. Overall, a flavorful, full-bodied example from one of America’s best brewers. Maverick34 (703), New York, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 27, 2009 Pours a clear, glowing red-brown, with a pillowy, creamy bone-white head. Quickly settles into a thin, creamy cap. Beautiful, unique looking beer.
Nose is fruity, estery, rich sweet malt hinting of slightly toasty burnt toffee, dark fruit and some earthy hops poking through.
Taste is fruity esters, over-ripe dark fruit from the malt, a bit toasty, and an earthy hop bitterness that’s especially prominent towards the finish. Buttery diacetyl pokes through as well.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a bit slick, thin but crisp carbonation.
Could use some age - freshness is nice, but leaves the aspects of the flavor just a bit unsettled. Still, the beer grows on you as it warms. zach8270 (2108), Henrietta, New York, USA

Aroma is lots of caramel malts with a roasted note. Some yeast. Flavor was malty at the start with some sweetness and caramel throughout. As it warmed up, hops became more present. Not knowing the style, I thought it was a hoppy Belgian dark. Beerman6686 (1287), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma was a bit odd, hints of caramal and roasted malts. Flavor was a bit watery maltiness, some roasted flavors and hints of caramal and chocolate. Sammy (4013), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Served too cold but still tasty, waited to drink it. A bit of aroma. Aggessive carbonation, but taste held out. miketd (679), Cleveland, Ohio, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 20, 2009 Tap at Barcade: Deep brown amber pour with a tan ring of head. Sweet cocoa/caramel aroma with a touch of barley roast- perhaps a diacetyl note is there as well. Medium carbonation- slightly sweet and mildly roasted flavor. Some caramel, light raisin, gritty cocoa-like roast/barley husk. A bit sweet and very simple. Boring, Old Ale?
