Commercial Description:
Since ancient times, people have complained that “things were better in the old days”. In the 1840’s, English brewers became nostalgic for beers of the previous century, strong dark ales with robust flavors. Thus the term “old ale” was born and these beers were re-popularized. Our Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale brings back the grand old style. It’s brewed with flavorful English Maris Otter malt with a dash of equally flavorful raw demerara sugar from Malawi. Challenger and East Kent Golding hops give the beer appetizing earthy/fruity aromatics. The bitterness is crisp, balancing a solid center of orangey fruit with caramel and chocolate notes. It dries into the finish, leaving a warm glow of malt. Perhaps some things really were better in the old days. Enjoy Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale with steaks, burgers, roast beef, lamb chops, Mexican mole and black bean sauces and hard cow’s-milk cheeses. Malts: British Maris Otter, Crystal, and Chocolate malts Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi Hops: Willamette, East Kent Golding, Challenger O.G.: 19° Plato (1076) ABV: 8.2%

10oz snifter via draft. Pours a dark brown to black. Nose is very slight, perhaps one of dark malts. I was a little surprised by the flavor of this example. Previous Old Ales (such as Theakson’s Old Peculiar) were much more malt and less roasty than this one. However, this difference isn’t necessarily a detriment. Overall, a flavorful, full-bodied example from one of America’s best brewers.

Pours a clear, glowing red-brown, with a pillowy, creamy bone-white head. Quickly settles into a thin, creamy cap. Beautiful, unique looking beer. Nose is fruity, estery, rich sweet malt hinting of slightly toasty burnt toffee, dark fruit and some earthy hops poking through. Taste is fruity esters, over-ripe dark fruit from the malt, a bit toasty, and an earthy hop bitterness that’s especially prominent towards the finish. Buttery diacetyl pokes through as well. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a bit slick, thin but crisp carbonation. Could use some age - freshness is nice, but leaves the aspects of the flavor just a bit unsettled. Still, the beer grows on you as it warms.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Mahogany pour with a fizzy tan head that disappears quickly. Aroma is lots of caramel malts with a roasted note. Some yeast. Flavor was malty at the start with some sweetness and caramel throughout. As it warmed up, hops became more present. Not knowing the style, I thought it was a hoppy Belgian dark.

This one poured a dark mahogany color with a tiny off white head. Aroma was a bit odd, hints of caramal and roasted malts. Flavor was a bit watery maltiness, some roasted flavors and hints of caramal and chocolate.

Enjoyed on tap at Coasters in Melbourne. Listed as an alt. Brown with white head, lacey. Served too cold but still tasty, waited to drink it. A bit of aroma. Aggessive carbonation, but taste held out.

Tap at Barcade: Deep brown amber pour with a tan ring of head. Sweet cocoa/caramel aroma with a touch of barley roast- perhaps a diacetyl note is there as well. Medium carbonation- slightly sweet and mildly roasted flavor. Some caramel, light raisin, gritty cocoa-like roast/barley husk. A bit sweet and very simple. Boring, Old Ale?
