Commercial Description:
Since ancient times, people have complained that “things were better in the old days”. In the 1840’s, English brewers became nostalgic for beers of the previous century, strong dark ales with robust flavors. Thus the term “old ale” was born and these beers were re-popularized. Our Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale brings back the grand old style. It’s brewed with flavorful English Maris Otter malt with a dash of equally flavorful raw demerara sugar from Malawi. Challenger and East Kent Golding hops give the beer appetizing earthy/fruity aromatics. The bitterness is crisp, balancing a solid center of orangey fruit with caramel and chocolate notes. It dries into the finish, leaving a warm glow of malt. Perhaps some things really were better in the old days. Enjoy Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale with steaks, burgers, roast beef, lamb chops, Mexican mole and black bean sauces and hard cow’s-milk cheeses. Malts: British Maris Otter, Crystal, and Chocolate malts Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi Hops: Willamette, East Kent Golding, Challenger O.G.: 19° Plato (1076) ABV: 8.2%

750ml twist cap growler fill. Mild aroma of sweet, dark, pitted fruit and lightly toasted malt. Tart fruit skin. Cherries and prunes. Earthy and grassy malt and hop profile. Pours a dark, nearly opaque brown with a thick, creamy off white head leaving spotty lacing. The English malts and hops definitely dominate the flavor. Earthy, toffee and toasty malt. Grassy, dirty and rather nondescript hops. Some tart apple, dried banana, bakers chocolate. Hops and malt never really come together all that well. Fairly light bodied for and Old Ale. Carbonation was adequate. Finishes fairly watery and dry. Thanks Larry!

Draft at some bar in NYC, served in a snifter. Like many beers of this style, there was a strong prune taste with this beer.

Draught at TJ’s: Aroma of malts. Poured copper/amber in color with a medium to large, dense, creamy, rocky, tan head that lasted throughout. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Small to medium lacing. Flavor is slightly sweet. Tastes of malts, spices, yeast, slight chocolate and light nuts. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malty, nutty finish.

The aroma is malty, toasted malts, and a nutty quality. A murky sweetness arises from the beer as well, like molasses maybe. Attractive amber, almost brown color, light off white head, decent amount of carbonation. The flavor is nutty up front, toasted malt, caramel, sugar, slight alcohol. Very enjoyable. The finish is a lingering bitterness from the hops, and slight alcohol. I love both traditional and old ales. This was worth finding. Definitely an enjoyable beer.

Thanks to beerbill for sharing last week. Pours a deep dark clear amber and a lasting thin head. Aroma is of toasted and nutty malts, lgith caramel sweetness, some light fruitye esters and a bit of raisin. Thin alcohol flavor with some slight sweet malts, nuts, char, and lots of candied dried fruits, some figs and dates, more fusels in the end and almost a vodka like end note. I expected more from Brooklyn on this one.
