Commercial Description:
Since ancient times, people have complained that “things were better in the old days”. In the 1840’s, English brewers became nostalgic for beers of the previous century, strong dark ales with robust flavors. Thus the term “old ale” was born and these beers were re-popularized. Our Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale brings back the grand old style. It’s brewed with flavorful English Maris Otter malt with a dash of equally flavorful raw demerara sugar from Malawi. Challenger and East Kent Golding hops give the beer appetizing earthy/fruity aromatics. The bitterness is crisp, balancing a solid center of orangey fruit with caramel and chocolate notes. It dries into the finish, leaving a warm glow of malt. Perhaps some things really were better in the old days. Enjoy Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale with steaks, burgers, roast beef, lamb chops, Mexican mole and black bean sauces and hard cow’s-milk cheeses. Malts: British Maris Otter, Crystal, and Chocolate malts Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi Hops: Willamette, East Kent Golding, Challenger O.G.: 19° Plato (1076) ABV: 8.2%

750ml ’Growler’ acquired in trade with goldtwins (thanks!). Poured a deep and clear orange/amber color (almost brown) with an averged sized off white head. Aromas of some roast, roasted caramel, chocolate, and some citrus. Tastes of chocolate, caramel, toffee, lighter citrus, fruity, and toasty.

Draft... Clear, dark ruby ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Great, everlasting retention. The malty, nutty nose offers additional notes of chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is vinous. Good, brisk bitterness and roastiness alongside notations of chocolate and light acidity. Bitter, roasted, dry finish.

My Bottom Line:
Simple toasted caramel sweetness and earthy, peppery hop bitterness perform in a creamy mouthfeel for a well-built but perhaps underwhelming Old Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A tower of foam protects the dark russet.
-The demerara sugar seems to offer more flavor in this one than the malts themselves.
-Faint cocoa is also detectable.
-Alcohol is not an issue at all even though this is over the 8% mark.
-The flavor profile is ably balanced.

On tap at Ebenezer’s.

Half growler shared by beerbill. Brown beer with a thin white head. Aroma is fairly rich... molasses and sweet plummy aroma. A little bit of orange peel and a little bit of cocoa as well. Lingering cocoaish flavour but the yeast is too simple and the beer is underhopped. Sweet sticky brew and a strange background note as well. Meh.

Draftr at Dilly Deli. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Medium toasted malt and complex aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced bittersweet flavor and medium toasted bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Soilid Drinkable beer.

Draft notes from DRE. Pours hazy dark brown with blackish ruby edges and small off-khaki head. Nose is dark malt, figgy and raisiny fruit, slight rauch, hops, spice, and cacao. Tastes malty, raisiny, a bit earthy, with some cacao, black currant, nuts, hops, and spicy notes. A slightly dark fruitier version of a scotch ale seems an apt comparison to this style.

Poured a clear deep amber color with a thin off-white head. the aroma had a light roast. The flavor had a light roast and tart fruit going for it. Light bodied. Old Ale? ok
