Commercial Description:
Since ancient times, people have complained that “things were better in the old days”. In the 1840’s, English brewers became nostalgic for beers of the previous century, strong dark ales with robust flavors. Thus the term “old ale” was born and these beers were re-popularized. Our Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale brings back the grand old style. It’s brewed with flavorful English Maris Otter malt with a dash of equally flavorful raw demerara sugar from Malawi. Challenger and East Kent Golding hops give the beer appetizing earthy/fruity aromatics. The bitterness is crisp, balancing a solid center of orangey fruit with caramel and chocolate notes. It dries into the finish, leaving a warm glow of malt. Perhaps some things really were better in the old days. Enjoy Brooklyn Blunderbuss Old Ale with steaks, burgers, roast beef, lamb chops, Mexican mole and black bean sauces and hard cow’s-milk cheeses. Malts: British Maris Otter, Crystal, and Chocolate malts Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi Hops: Willamette, East Kent Golding, Challenger O.G.: 19° Plato (1076) ABV: 8.2%

On draft at Teresa’s Next Door. Pours a dark mahogany red with a small off white head. Aroma of dark fruit and brown sugar. Taste of dark fruit, brown sugar and candied malt.

Draft at Tyler’s, Durham. Rich, brown/red colored brew, very dark. small light tan head. Dark malt and alcohol aroma. Robust flavors include roasted malt, brown sugar, cinnamon, plums. The aftertaste leans towards roast and smokiness. Even a little meaty. Nice stuff.

Had this at Bar Great Harry in Brooklyn NY with Garrett Oliver. This was my favorite beer of the night. Deep brown pour right from the tap. Strong malt character with robust brown sugar flavors. Sweet, sessionable, and dangerous.

12oz (requested half-pour) at Mr. Pickwicks Pub. Poured a rather clear tawny brown with thin off-white head that receded quickly. Aromas of toasted nuts, malted grains, light molasses, and something like dry-rotting wood (in a nice way). Flavors focused on the malted grain and toasty nuts plus some dark caramel notes and a little sweet-bitter finish. The finish is long and stuck with me even after two other beers and french fries. I could still pull up the finish a half hour later. And oh, yeh...that’s a good thing!

Pours a clear, glowing red-brown, with a pillowy, creamy bone-white head. Quickly settles into a thin, creamy cap. Beautiful, unique looking beer. Nose is fruity, estery, rich sweet malt hinting of slightly toasty burnt toffee, dark fruit and some earthy hops poking through. Taste is fruity esters, over-ripe dark fruit from the malt, a bit toasty, and an earthy hop bitterness that’s especially prominent towards the finish. Buttery diacetyl pokes through as well. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a bit slick, thin but crisp carbonation. Could use some age - freshness is nice, but leaves the aspects of the flavor just a bit unsettled. Still, the beer grows on you as it warms.

The aroma is malty, toasted malts, and a nutty quality. A murky sweetness arises from the beer as well, like molasses maybe. Attractive amber, almost brown color, light off white head, decent amount of carbonation. The flavor is nutty up front, toasted malt, caramel, sugar, slight alcohol. Very enjoyable. The finish is a lingering bitterness from the hops, and slight alcohol. I love both traditional and old ales. This was worth finding. Definitely an enjoyable beer.

Draft... Clear, dark ruby ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Great, everlasting retention. The malty, nutty nose offers additional notes of chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is vinous. Good, brisk bitterness and roastiness alongside notations of chocolate and light acidity. Bitter, roasted, dry finish.

snifter @ Tyler’s Apex. Sweet, Fig/date, banana, little roast/smoke, kind of a cardboard streak. Orangy brown color, good head, ok lace. Sweet malty flavor, medium body, creamy mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Damn good beer,
