Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Brown Ale, made exclusively with American ingredients, won Bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival in the Strong Ale Category in 1991 and in the American Brown Ale Category in 1992. Brooklyn Brown uses pale, crystal, chocolate, and black malts to attain a complex creamy texture. It is more heavily hopped than its British forbears.

Pours a clear brown with a ruby tinge and a moderate tan head. Aroma is mildly nutty. Flavor is more of the same, mildly nutty with a little stronger roasted flavor. Well balanced and easy drinking.

Medium yellowish beige head. Deep dark red barely translucent body. Earthy licorice malts aroma with fruity notes. Strong peppery hops fill out the background. Dry peppery earthy roasty taste with fruity malty notes. Licorice, too. A bit soapy. A touch watery, but the taste is so wonderfully clear and distinct it doesn’t matter. Sharpish mouthfeel. Some sweetness. Dry ashes, earth, and licorice taste lingers. Very good! (0.355l bottle from Systembolaget, Charlottenberg.)

Beer is deep ruddy brown and forms a thick and light brown head. Aroma is caramel malty with sweet fruits. Flavor is nutty, roasted malty and the ending is a little bit roasted and hoppy. Body is medium.

Brooklyn Brown Ale ABV: 5.4% Calories: 150 Volume: 12 fl oz Glass: tulip Purchased at: Hopewell Valley Wines Price per fl oz: $7.99 / 72 fl oz = $.11 per fl oz Consumed at: home. sensory first impression: A beautiful, carbonated, deep red ale, with a chocolate nutty aroma, thin tannish head, and dark red and orange highlights. What a beatiful beer. Nice hoppy bite and a malty backbone. Not as heavy as you expect, but not disappointing at all. Lace hangs nicely. A bit thin in weight, but texture and flavor are spot on. Aroma/Olfactory: Malt flavor is: caramel, chocolate, nuts, sawdust Hop flavor is: resinous, floral, muddy. Yeast flavor is: dusty, sharp cheese, crispy, dry. Other flavors include: alcohol, garlic, ginger, raisin, sulfur, smoke, cherries Visuals/Appearance: Color is: deep red, brown, burnt brick, fiery, Darth Maul. Liquid is: clear, sparkling, attractive. Head and lace are: frothy, tan, lace hangs on and on. Taste/Flavor: Maltiness or Sweetness level is: medium Hoppiness or Bitterness level is: medium Sour level is: heavy Palate/Tactile: Body or Mouthfeel is: medium to full Texture is: sticky, salty, sour Carbonation is: lively Finish is: medium astringent, middling Overall experience: A very nice change of pace - I’d have this again, though it is not at the level of a fruity hefeweizen or a chocolate stout, it is a delicious and flavor driven ale.

Two tries with this brew. Once on tap and once in bottle. Dark brown color, light to medium body. Little to no head. Smooth roasted malt taste with a hint of chocolate and hops. Aftertaste was memorable.

(Draught) Nice dark ruby brown, small beige head. Nose is malty and herbal hops. Flavor has strong caramel malts, finishes dry with smooth hop bitterness. Light to medium bodied, with smooth and perhaps even a little creamy mouthfeel.

12oz. Bottle: Dark amber to ruby red body topped w/ a small off-white head. Big caramel aroma w/ some very light hops hanging in there. Flavor mirrors the aroma: Caramel & a hint of hops. Smooth, very smooth. Very creamy mouthfeel w/ a sweet, sticky finish. Flavor is pretty one dimensional, but the palate is fantastic...go figure.

Aroma is not typical. It’s smooth roasted caramel with grassy or floral hop. Very dark garnet color with a smeary white film for head. Full bodied with mild and creamy carbonation. Flavor is roasted caramel with floral sort of hop. It’s a bit darkly bready, but not overly sweet. Sort of an overachieving Newcastle Brown. Character it’s got. The finish is much as the beginning. This ale is arguably in a class by itself.
