| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 18, 2009 Bottle. Poured a deep brown, just a couple shades lighter than cola. Nose was big and rich, spicy, sweet, malty, and (surprise!) actually hoppy. Palate was deceptively simple, but very tasty and approachable, but the complexity showed through if you looked for it. A solid beer, from an often underwhelming style.

Nice American version of Samuel Smiths Nut Brown ale. joeymacaroni (240), Wagontown, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 27, 2009 Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a hefeweizen glass. The beer pours a medium brown color with a surprisingly frothy light tan head. The characteristic grassy note of Centennial hops come through in the nose, muddling and nearly ruining what would otherwise beer a nice amalgam of English character malts. Notes of caramel, toffee, and a pale chocolate/chocolate malt combo. The palate carries a nice balance of crisp bitterness from the aforementioned American hop varietal, along with the sort of malt flavors one would expect from an English porter. The finish is clean and fairly dry. Overall, one of the first great craft beers, and one that I have been remiss in taking so long to re-evaluate. yobdoog (1533), Woodridge NY, New York, USA

Flavor has some toast, roasted grain and peanuts with a bit of caramel sweetness and hint of bitterness. malrubius (1004), Valley Stream, New York, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Dec 7, 2009 12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Brown with lasting light tan head and lace. Mild toasty malt aroma. Toasty brown sugar with mild dark fruit sweetness and mild bitter somewhat fizzy finish. Medium-light body with a little carbo bite. Not a huge fan of the style. Only might eighth brown ale rating. (Haven’t even rated Newcastle, which I’ve had many times in the distant past.) Decent enough. smcolw (373), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 4, 2009 Modest head that leaves low level lace. The color is neutral brown--appears clear.
Warm caramel aroma with a touch of chocolate. Light hop in the background.
The taste reminds me of a pale ale with lots of crystal malts. Pleasant hop finish--still this is a malty beer with light chocolate malts. Relatively thin liquor.
