Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

Originally I was a bit down on Brooklyn but even then I liked this one. Over the years I’ve come to appreciate Garrett Oliver’s restraint.

Poured a foamy white head atop a translucent pale amber body, much like apple juice. Aroma was slightly piney, apple, pear, floral honey, and biscuit. Flavor was sweet honey, citric, apple, pear, biscuit and bitter hops. Palate induced a somewhat peppery carbonation that left a bitter resinous aftertaste. I think this one is just a little too fruity to be a pale ale and not hoppy enough to be an IPA but it is enjoyable. Nothing to scorn.

Bottle. A light fruity smell, a fine balance between sour and sweet. Overall a strong aroma. The small white fizzy head disappears fast, the body is between orange and red. The taste is fruity and bitter with a long duration. The body is dry and creamy with a soft carbonation and a medium body. A nice IPA.

Bottle. Pours a clear orange with little head. Aromas are thick with oranges and citrus hops. As this one develops across the palate it moves from oranges and sweet malt to a piney/grapfruity finish that is very good. Still, it lacks a little up front and the finish is kind of rugged.

12oz bottle. Clear amber with a medium white head. Grassy, woody, and light orange aroma. Light orange and caramel flavors with a strongly bitter and lightly alcoholic flavor. Medium bodied with creamy carbonation. The bitterness in the finish is just a bit too rough for me; I could definitely use a fruitier hop profile to soften it up.

(Bottle, Akkurat, Stockholm, 4 March 2009) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, hoppy nose with caramel, orange peel, grapefruit and hints of pine needles. Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of caramel, grapefruit, orange peel and hints of pine needles. Medium body, balanced sweetness. Generous bitterness, but not overly hoppy. And the hops are brilliantly balanced by a solid malt foundation. A really well made beer with a nice hoppy twist.

This is not your typical "slapped in the face by megahops" IPA. This beer is complex and very drinkable. It’s not the hoppiest IPA out there, but it is one the best crafted and most drinkable I’ve had in quite some time.

Wow, what a great IPA. Not at all like other IPA is that malt characteristics are far more complex and rich. Notes of nutmeg in the nose and palate. Very impressed.
