Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

Amber color with good creamy head. I was expecting American citrus hop aroma but got a strong floral and fruity hop aroma with a caramel malt backbone. Flavor is more high pitched; dominated by the floral/fruity hops with strong bitterness. Alcohol taste at the finish. Thin to medium body. An American amount of English style hops.

350ml bottle. Lovely fruity bitter aroma, slightly sweet. Sticky in the mouth, alcoholic too, and the hoppiness is a bit resiny. Pleasant, but a little one sided - the malt is almost non-existent compared to the hops. Also, the alcohol is too prominent, there was no need for it to be brewed to this strength. I suspect 19th century English beers were absolutely nothing like this American brew. Get back to studying, Garrett.

Smells of sour citrus hops, faint grapefruit. Pours a clear copper color with a nice thick white head. Taste is strong hops with a well-balanced malt presence. Some earthy notes as well. A nice IPA.

Brooklyn East India Pale Ale is copper-brown beer with thin white head. Aroma is slightly sweet with some fruits and hops. Flavour is slightly different than aroma because there are no sweetness anymore. Strong bitterness is found in the beginning and it soften later. Slightly oily with moderate carbonation makes this nice to drink. Slightly one-sided IPA but still enjoyable.

Clear copper beer with a small off-white head. Fruity hop aroma. Flavor is not as bitter as most IPAs, mostly sweet malt with some hoppy notes, dry finish. No trace of alcohol in the tatse, a solid IPA.

Quite simply this is an IPA that does everything right. Good looks, good hop aroma, good bitter finish.

Y’know, I like this beer. I don’t particularly like IPA’s, but this one has something special most American takes on the style don’t - balance. The aroma has a very strong ringwood sense to it, with iron, sulfur, copper, cat urine, fruitiness, and very earthy notes. The taste is quite pleasing, in that it’s balanced. Not too hoppy, with a firm, strong malt body. Very traditionally English tasting, and not an over the top hop experience. A tad light in the mouth. Overall, I dig it, about as much as I can dig an IPA.
