Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

Brooklyn East Indian Pale Ale ABV: 6.8% IBU: Volume: 12 fl oz Glass: Tapered 16oz Purchased at: Sherwood Liquors Consumed on: Wednesday, February 27th, 2008 first impression: Thick head calms down quickly to a thin foamy cover. The color is rich and varied and has subtle golden variations within a deep red hue. The hops are very present, and the carbonation is very active. Lace hangs nicely to the glass. The color is very nice. Aroma is mindful of a clean, wet brick walk. Lingering attention is in the upper back roof of the mouth. Aroma/Olfactory: Malt is creamy, flexible, and exquisite. Just a hint of nuttiness. Hops are grassy, citrusy, and very nice. Yeast/Bacteria is of a brick or basement aroma, but not bad at all. Reminds one of autumn. Raisins, soy and smoke, with impressions of a field after the rain. Visuals/Appearance: Color one of the most beautiful beers I know of despite a rather lame head. Liquid is quite clear, and actively carbonated Head is minimal but lace hangs if thinly for the duration, just slightly off white. The head is a downer, but minimal points off. Taste/Flavor: Lightly sweet, and ends with a rich, thorough bite. Slightly sour by design, and bitter is its most welcome aspect. Palate/Tactile: Body/Mouthfeel is full and luxurious - like a real hot chocolate in texture, but not in flavor at all. Texture is creamy with a finishing bite. Carbonation is lively and plays off the color nicely. Finish is thankfully long and bitter. Overall, a very nice exemplar of an IPA - slightly sour, very bitter, biting, beautiful. Stands up to spicy foods, delicious on its own. Easily available, affordable and one of my favorite beers to enjoy.

My current favorite brew, from anyone! But reading many of these reviews, I suspect that this one does not travel well - I always get it very fresh, so that might make a difference. Upon opening, the beautiful flowery aroma starts my mouth watering (no kidding) .... beautiful, deep amber in the glass ... decent creamy head which fades fairly quickly (although I drink it too fast to be sure, I admit) ... drinks sharp & dry, just the way a great IPA ought to. With an alcohol content of 6.9%, this one is too delicious & dangerous for me - but I keep drinking it, anyway! Still cannot find another IPA which comes close.

This is a very good beer. Try it! Bitter/sweet a full body for a pale ale.

Bright, floral and spicy. Really touches all the bases of possible hops flavors. Some citrus, pine, resin, pepper, earthiness, etc. Really the floral character is what stands out, though. Has somewhat of an alcoholic flavor, but no real burn. Malt is also prominent, balancing nicely. Caramel and toffee abound. Nice full, darker malt flavors, allowing them to stand up, rather than some american attempts that give the hops nothing to stand on. Bitterness is ample for the style. Nicely palate cleansing, but not tongue scrapingly bitter. Body is full and mouthfeel is wonderfully slippery and smooth. While it pretends to be truly traditional, this is really a melding of the English and American styles. Either way, it is superbly done. Easily one of my favorite IPAs. Brilliant beer.

One of my favorite IPA’s but I like Harpoon a little better.

I was a little disappointed by the subdued hoppiness of this beer. Don’t misunderstand me, it has a good hop flavor, just not as prominent as I was expecting. Still a good all around IPA.

Dark amber looking lager like beer, with a great sherbert like aroma. Very fizzy drink with a bitter dry finish. A great beer, perfect for a refreshing drink.

A fine example of an IPA. True to the style.
