Commercial Description:
January 2008 release of the Brooklyn Brewmaster Reserve series. Brooklyn Extra Brune is a Belgian-style dark abbey ale, brewed in the style developed by Belgium’s Trappist monasteries. Its rich, plumy, raisiny flavors are derived not only from Belgian yeasts, but also from imported Belgian dark “candi” sugar syrup. This syrup is ultra-caramelized, lending both flavor and color to this copper-brown beer. The yeast gives the beer a fruity/spicy complexity, which starts slightly sweet on the palate, but dries into the finish. This is a perfect beer for winter foods – game meats, lamb, stews, and rich cheeses. Malts: European Pilsner malt, Belgian “Special B”. Additional sugars: Belgian Dark Candi Hops: German Perle OG: 19.2° Plato ABV: 8.5%

Poured a lightly hazy brown amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, light banana, some clove, light fruit, and a bit of smoke. Taste was caramel, dark fruits, some spices, banana, and a dry, alcoholic finish.

Tap: Appearance: Lovely dark copper/amber with a nice small off-white/beige head. Ample carbonation racing up the sides of the chalice. roma: When first served cold, the aroma was rather strong banana, clove and peppery spice and light fruity notes. As the glass warmed the flavor became very faint. Flavor: Burnt bananas, raisins & cloves, yeasty spicy with a light fruity flavor backed by some caramel/sweet malt. Flavor ends abruptly with a dry finish. Palate: light and almost airy mouthfeel from a relatively thin body and ample carbonation. Overall: Not a bad representation but no where near the depth of flavor and complexity of other offerings (including Local 1).

On draft at GL. Pours a light coppery color with a small beige head that quickly fades. Aroma of candied malts and cotton candy. Taste of candied malts, cotton candy and sugar. Very similar to Weyerbacher Quad.

Brooklyn Extra Brune sampled at The Grey Lodge Bar. It has an amber color to it with an ok off white head and lacing. You can smell the alcohol and also fruity/malty sweetness. The taste is amazing. You can really taste the alcohol! Its smooth for an over 8 percent. Fruity, sweet, and malty with a perfect hop bite.

Draft at DRE. Deep copper toward brown pour with off-white head. Nose is banana, clovey spice, some cobwebby yeasty malt. Tastes malty with a solid banana and clove flavor underneath.

Tap @ Mr. Dunderbak’s. Pours a clear copper with a one finger light tan head that fades leaving minimal lacing. Aroma is a bubblegum bomb accented by more bubblegum. Taste is bubblegum with spicy yeast and a hint of sweet caramel. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and a slightly tart finish. Good but the bubblegum is a little overwhelming.

On tap at Dive Bar. Poured a dark brown with no head. Clearly an homage to belgian beer, that I found to be good, not great. Seemed to lack the depth of flavor that the great beers have. Worth a try for sure though.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Dark copper color with a puffy tan head. Aroma is dark and fruity with hints of wheat, yeast, spices, cloves, dark malts, and very light hops. Taste has lots of different fruit flavors including raisins, plums, and prunes with a malty and smooth middle and a very spicy and yeasty finish. Very warm in the finish.
