Commercial Description:
January 2008 release of the Brooklyn Brewmaster Reserve series. Brooklyn Extra Brune is a Belgian-style dark abbey ale, brewed in the style developed by Belgium’s Trappist monasteries. Its rich, plumy, raisiny flavors are derived not only from Belgian yeasts, but also from imported Belgian dark “candi” sugar syrup. This syrup is ultra-caramelized, lending both flavor and color to this copper-brown beer. The yeast gives the beer a fruity/spicy complexity, which starts slightly sweet on the palate, but dries into the finish. This is a perfect beer for winter foods – game meats, lamb, stews, and rich cheeses. Malts: European Pilsner malt, Belgian “Special B”. Additional sugars: Belgian Dark Candi Hops: German Perle OG: 19.2° Plato ABV: 8.5%

Draft at The Ravenous Pig. Pours a crystal clear copper color with a tiny, fizzy, off-white head. Seconds after the pour, the head disappears, with absolutely no lacing left behind on the glass. The aroma is a strange one, with dark fruits, bright floral hops, Cocoa Puffs cereal, caramel, and cotton candy. Like the nose, the flavor is very sweet. Substantial, peppery, floral hops try to compensate for the sugary nature, but to no avail. Cocoa powder adds a dry, bittersweet element, particularly on the finish. That weird cotton candy note creeps back in just prior to that. A medium body gets most of its substance from the sugar, which doesn’t sit well with me. This is a decent brew, but its ultimately too sweet. Why such extreme filtering? This beer would benefit in many ways from some natural body.

Draught: Aroma of alcohol, malts, candi sugar, and yeast. Poured amber in color with a medium-sized tan head that diminished. Hazy. Sparkling. Flavor is lightly to medium sweet. Flavor of alcohol, yeast, bubblegum, and spices. Medium body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Yeasty finish.

hand bottle from ty5592... a clear rich coppery amber color with a thin off white head. smells belgian... notes of yeast, banana, earth and caramel. there’s a light sweetness on the palate but it’s not unpleasant as it is combined with hints of yeast, spice, brown sugar, fruit/banana, nuts and cut with a light alcohol burn. dry yeasty finish and lingering aftertaste of good banana bread with raisins in it. medium body. soft texture that gets a bit watery as it warms...

Draft. Deep ruby/amber color, with a yeasty and spicy aroma. Flavor is immediately Belgian, full of cloves, dried fruit, and sugar. And of course, the warming alcoholic kick. Tasty beer.

Draft @ Rustico. Dark tawny murky brown colored body with a toast/tan colored head. Direct brown sugar/toast/trappist-like yeast heavy nose: clove, raisin, toast, dates, etc. Flavor is slightly sweet, chewy, a little gritty - tastes of brown sugar and cherry malts, some booze for sure, more apparent than 9% should be, but overall a pretty damn tasty dark Belgian.

Draft @ Rustico. Pours a hazy, orange-amber color; off-white head with patchy fine-bubbled lacing. Pleasant amounts of Belgian sugar, brown sugar, and a bit of citrus rind and dry cloves; a fair amount of booze coming through. Medium-to-full chewy mouthfeel: tons of brown sugar, Belgian sugar, zesty citrus, bananas and cloves; follows the nose well; again, chewy and generous, with plenty of warming alcohol. A touch messy. Lengthy, chewy finish: dry cloves, esters, and brown sugar.

Draft. Great, even carbonation and nice long palate. Great depth from the sugar -- the beer is sweet without being cloying or syrupy. Plenty of fruit as well. Medium-brown body and some lacing. Pretty well-integrated.

Pours dark amber with a small off white head. The aroma is sweet with some caramel and slight hints of fruit. The taste is sweet with banana, and some spice. Finish is smooth.
