Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)
ABV: 8.0%

Darker brown with a big coffee aroma tha thas some roast, coffee, and nuttiness. Flavor is coffee dominant, but lacks any depth & complexity beyond coffee and some sugar. I like it as a coffee beer lover, but its kinda mediocre for the style.

Big thanks to kiefdog. Pours deep darkness with semi loose head afloat in a creamy mocha colored sea. The aroma is noticed from a foot away with little effort bringing forth robust yummy rich dark roasted coffee backed up by a thin layer of chocolate and caramel. The taste begins vaguely roasty and then moves into more robust roasted malt notes and growing dark roasted coffee. The coffee peaks toward the finish with a delicious layer of chocolate and caramel lingering into the after taste.

On tap at the Brick Store. Pours almost completely opaque black with a small tan head that recedes pretty quickly and left spotty lacing. The aroma is definitely about the roasted coffee which dominates from start to finish. There are hints of malt sweetness in the back, but they’re only supporting the coffee. Maybe a hint of earthy hops in the nose as well. The taste follows the aroma but is probably a little more well-rounded than the aroma. It’s got the roasted coffee, but there is a stronger dark chocolate presence than in the aroma and the malt backbone is a little more apparent. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with soft carbonation and very creamy. This one could have been a tad heavier on the body side. I love coffee stouts, so this beer is definitely tasty for me. I wouldn’t put it up there with my favorites, but it’s definitely a solid beer from Brooklyn.

Draft… Pours black with a small, tightly packed, light brown head. The aroma is an acrid swirl of espresso grounds, dark chocolate, black cherries and toasted almonds. Full-bodied and creamy with lively carbonation. The flavor offers dark-roasted coffee and chocolate followed by a mocha, acrid and dry finish. Nicely done.

Poured from the tap into a tasting glass. The color was a very dark black with a brownish foamy head. Some real nice lacing. The smell is a nice coffee flavor with a hint of burnt malts. The taste is a strong coffee bean flavor. Malty hints also come out in the taste in the back end. A bit of a mocha flavor as well. The feel to this beer is quite easy. Sliding over the taste buds and giving a slight alcohal feel to the pallete without hampering the flavor or the feel to the beer. Serving type: on-tap

Black, thick, rich tan head. Smells like coffee with cream. My notes say that it tastes like instant coffee dumped into a stout, in a good way. Nice mix of coffee and dryish stouty flavors.
