Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)
ABV: 8.0%

On tap at some joint called the Busy Bee, Raleigh, in the company of Immy and emacgee. Very nice pour into a snifter, thick and oily. Pretty nice cafe au lait head, opaque body. The mouthfeel is really thick and velvety, the nose rich and potent. Slight earthiness in the aroma, along with Vienna roast, that kind of blend. The cold filtered coffee comes through nicely, suffused pretty well throughout the beer. Odd fruit and yeast notes come through, unexpected at the very least. It’s not unpleasant, but as Ethan said there’s some stylistic confusion on some level. With a relative lack of bitterness, this could somehow resemble a black ale with coffee? Whatever it is, I like it and hope to have more.

Growler shared by Hophead22. Pours black with a small brown head. Aroma is really roasty with a load of coffee. Some dark dried fruit and maybe even a little banana. Flavor is black coffee and fresh fruit, some berries and raisins. Palate is smooth, medium to full bodied, and low carbonation.

Draft at The Busy Bee in Raleigh with Immy and JCB. Consumed while watching something happen for someone in a corner...Pours a dark black with a two finger creamy dark tan head. The nose is earthy, sweet, bubblegum, estery, sweet chocolate, coffee, no roast. The flavor showed very smooth coffee, almost no roast, lots of sweet flavors. Doesn’t really feel like an RIS. Palate had a creamy feel with a mild roast bitterness.

Bottle courtesy of Rblwthacoz. Pressure filled bomber, pours murky dark brown to pitch black with foamy tan head. Aroma is roasted and malty with notes of strong fresh coffee, molasses, some hints of vanilla. Flavor is also roasted and malty with lighter notes of fresh coffee, chocolate, molasses, hints of brown sugar and cream. Generally medium to full body with a roasted coffee finish.

Served on tap at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours almost purely black with no light escaping from any part of the glass. Medium tan head with good head retention and lacing. Aroma is big rich chocolate with big rich coffee. Some roastiness and caramel as well. Taste is intense, bitter, rich coffee with big dark chocolate notes and some roastiness and fruitiness. Full bodied. Pretty good stuff. 8/4/8/4/15

Draft at Capone’s. Onyx pour with clingy tan head that laces well. Nose is coffee, dark malt, cacao, raisins, hops. Tastes very smooth, very well balanced, with the coffee not overpowering, and flavors of dark malt, espresso, cacao, hops, and mild blackberry. Very good.

Draft at Datz. Talk about a big bang coffee stout. Its like drinking a cup of cold coffee with a hint of beer flavor. Amazingly dark almost black color thick tan head and aromas of choc and coffee. Finishes somewhat sweet with a touch of bittersweet choc.
