Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)
ABV: 8.0%

On tap at Copenhagen Beerfestival. Served by the brewmaster. A dense, tan head forms a diminishing lid over an almost black body. Coffee-grit, some burnt notes, black coffee and hints of vanilla, sweetness and butterscotch in the aroma. It’s full-bodied and nicely carbonated, with flavors of cold dark coffee, sweetness, dark chocolate, mocha and some roasted bitterness. Not much hops to detect, and the bitterness in the finish is of the coffee-like kind. A really lovely coffee beer. (090515)

Draft at Birreria Paradiso. Pitch black with a beige unfading head. Choco-coffee aroma. odd unique mouthfeel..nitro? Sweet, sticky cocoa coffee taste. Not unlike hoppy chocolate syrup. Somewhat sandy and dry mid-sip. Huge roasty flavor. Interesting, and well done.

Tap. Heavy malt aromas of molasses, toasted, and of course coffee, moderate resin for the hops, light earth for the yeast, with hints of cola and dark dried fruits. Head is thin, creamy, light brown, with fair lacing and good legs, and is mostly lasting. Color is dark brown with a red tint. Flavor starts moderately sweet and finishes moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy with a lively carbonation. An explosion of coffee right up front, then a great mouthfeel to finish it all off.

on tap @ Tyler’s Apex. Great aroma, sweet. Coffee, milk, caramel. Black color, small cocoa head that faded quickly got a half ring for a little, no lace. Bitter sweet flavor. Medium body, lite creamy mouth feel, bitter dry finish. Good stout, I sniffed aroma for a while before sipping, flavor turned more straight forward bitter roast. Funny they put out a coffee stout this time of year, not that I mind....

On tap at the brewery. Strong fresh coffee aroma. Black color with a small brown head. Moderate coffee bitterness mellowing in the finish. Palate is lighter that you’d expect.

[2119-20090502] Tap. Rich chocolate coffee bean aroma is very strong and lingering. Dark black brown body with a medium-lasting creamy dark brown head and some lacing. Rich coffee smooth malt continues in the flavour with richly roasted chocolate. Rough medium-full body. Rich and bitter and dark and very yummy.
Overheard: "Smells like just after you’ve crunched into a chocolate-covered coffee bean."
