Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)
ABV: 8.0%

Great smell, and then nothing. Lots of coffee, but the taste is a bit watery, not too roasty, and a but dry. Truly disappointing, as I LOVE coffee in a beer (or anywhere.) Does not hold up to other coffee beers (Peche, Breakfast, Wake and Bake etc)

Another quality beer sampled on tap at Max’s in Baltimore. The beer was a solid black color with a dark brown-tan head with slight retention and decent cling. It had a big roasty coffee aroma with a touch of grain, chocolate, and some caramel. The beer had a very sweet coffee-dominated taste with a touch of chocolate and some lighter bitterness. It was very wet with a medium mouth cling and light carbonation; the beer become lighter and drier at the end. Very good beer, tasted more like coffee than any beer I had ever had before.

On tap at Brooklyn Brewery. Mine was poured a deep, thick dark chocolate with no head, although the person next to me had a caramelized head on his. The smell... wow, the strongest coffee aroma I’ve found in a beer! A strong iced coffee smell dominates everything. It taste of coffee and caramel, almost like a Manhattan Special soda. This was delicious. The biggest shortcoming for me with that it was quite syrupy toward the end, almost to the point of needing water between sips to clean my mouth.

Tap Sunset. Aroma of expresso beans. Taste of interesting coffee notes but ends in a slight watery taste. Not bad but not the best.

Draught at TJ’s: Aroma of bitter coffee. Poured black in color with a medium-sized brown head that diminished but lasted around the edges. Opaque. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of bitter coffee, slight cream, and slight sugar. Medium body. Slightly chalky, lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter coffee finish. Like a cup of coffee with zero alcohol, which, I guess, is what is so amazing about this beer. Perhaps I would rate it higher if I were a coffee drinker.

draft at mews tavern poured a solid black in color with a thin brown head by the time it got to the table. aroma has nice fresh roasted dark coffee, creamy chocolate, and underlying sweetness. mouth feel is smooth for this style and the carbonation just enough. flavor kicks hard with the espresso roasted coffee, enough dark malt to keep up, light sweetness, and coco chocolate. nice big bold flavors but steers clear of the bitterness.

CBF09. From tap. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Roasted malt and slight chocolate aroma. Flavour has the same malt driven notes with a light acidic touch. Vague vanilla into the far finish. Smooth and easy.

Growler, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing! Pours a deep black with a small bubbly tan head. Big coffee aroma, with malt, wood. Sharp, burnt taste, of toasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and wood. Lingering burnt-coffee flavors. Fantastic.
