Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)
ABV: 8.0%

Draft at Eli Cannon’s. Dark brown-black. Aroma is very straightforward coffee. Mouthfeel is soft, silky, low carbonation. Nice sweet background flavors with the coffee on top. Surprisingly lacks roastiness, which I would have liked. Still not bad.

Draft – Max’s. Black, thin tan creamy head. Intense coffee and caramel aromas ride waves of dark chocolate coated pistachio nuts. Starbuck’s iced coffee flavors balance well on soft notes of dark currants and roasted milk chocolate. Rounds with a light ashy bitterness. Medium bodied and slick, soft carbonation, bittersweet coffee finish. Brooklyn needs to bottle this one! Another great coffee brew in my mind…

On tap, Eli’s Cannon’s. Pours black with a small brown head. Aroma of fresh espresso beans and licorice. Flavor starts with malty sweetness and roasts. Coffee kicks in by mid-palate, rounding flavors and producing new sharpnesses that are centered around coffee. I am sure there are additional flavors that support this beer, but alas I am writing this review from memory a couple hours after leaving the bar. Overall this is a very enjoyable drink, perhaps a touch thin for my liking.

Had this at Rattle n Hum in NY about 6 weeks ago. Comments from brief notes on menu. Black as tar with no head. Just enough carbonation. Roasted malt and coffee aroma with hint of citrus.

On tap at the Brooklyn Brewery. Opaque black, slightly oily, thin beige head. Aroma of cold pressed coffee, slightly nutty, slight chocolate. Flavor is all coffee, some nuts, some chocolate, dry crackers. Full bodied, bitter coffee finish. No alcohol presence. Very good.
