Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

Color is caramel-orange with a quickly diminishing head. Aroma is generic-ale fruity with some peach and cherry. The flavor has some nice maltiness and toasty biscuit, very smooth, not very intense for a barleywine. Finishes with some pine-resin hoppiness. Not a typical barley wine, in some good ways, some not so good ways.

(Bottle). Sweet fruit aroma. Deep copper color with almost no head. Flavor is fruity, sweet, with an alcohol finish. Sprightly, but not particularly complex. Perhaps the 2007 I had would have benefited from more aging.

Pours a clear orange with a minimal head. The aroma is medium sweet, big caramel malt and a bit medicinal. Flavor is very malty and fruity with a noticable alcohol finish. Rich texture, medium bodied.

2007 Bottle. Delivered on the malt and hops but it’s just too young (my fault there) Alcohol burn was still present. Needs some age.

Poured a cloudy light orange color with an off white head. Aroma was some what malty, a little bit of hops, and a lot of alcohol. Flavor was also very malty, somewhat fruity, probably form the citrusy hops, and a lot of alcohol warmth.

Bottle, #392   Burgundy pour with small head. Warm malty aroma and flavor. Clean finish, not the best barley wine around.
