Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

A nice, if less than extraordinary barley wine. A less than powerful aroma is the weak point in a beer that pours a lovely, deep reddish brown, has a nicely spicy hop flavor, and a medium mouthfeel. Not as heavy as some BWs, which might make it more appropriate for seasons OTHER than winter. Hey, I’m drinking (and enjoying) it in May, so to each his own, eh?

12 fl. oz. bottle via dkachur (thanks!), shared with Lubiere, served almost cool in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep ruby, clear, frail white froth. Aroma: Metallic (unfortunate), really big cherries, raisins and molasses, a touch of licorice, a bit of meaty mash, fair alcohol, light warming spices. Palate: Medium+ body, soft carbonation, a bit syrupy. Flav.: Burnt sugar, cherries, wood, lots of alcohol, a touch of nuttiness, a bit of vanilla and marzipan, some apricots, touches of tang; plenty of alcohol and nuts, light licorice.

Heavy-handed and simple. Needs aging, maybe?

bottle - Pours dark amber with a thin head. The aroma is of dark fruit accented malt and a little hops and alcohol. The flavor is sweet malts with a little fruit coming through, some warming alcohol, and some light bitterness in the finish. It’s quite tasty without crossing the threshold to true excellence.

355 ml bottle. Brown color, moderate off-white head. Aroma is hops and fruit. Flavor is hops and fruit. Sweet. Alcohol is well hidden.

Ok Barley wine, som vist var større engang, synes den smagte bedre for et par år siden. Flot krop og godt med frugt dufte.

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a clear amber color with an off-white head. The aroma is very nice with notes of malt and citrus. The taste is very nice wish malt and fruit notes. The finish is especially clean for a 10.8% abv.

12oz single bottle, 2007 vintage, purchased from Charles Street Liquors in Boston. Pours a rich dark clear copper with little head or carbonation. Sweet aroma. Flavour is primarily sweet, with some hops that try (unsuccessfully) to offset the sweetness. Not my thing - but then, it seems most barleywines aren’t.
