Commercial Description:
Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.

After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.

It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Food Matches

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a fine accompaniment to cheeses, ice cream, flourless cakes, crème brulee and good cigars.

bottle 2007: pours a good rudty brown with a small thin white head. aroma is very malty with a good mix of hops and fruit. i get both fresh and dried fruits. i cant really pick out what they are. very nice aroma. flavour is pretty strong of sweet caramel malts and pungent alcohol. i get a good ammount of dried apricot adn some fresh citrus peel. there is a decent hop bitterness in the finish. not bad

The pour is a hazy amber with a small white head. The nose is astringent, and not very complex. The flavor while not unpleasant is rather thin and not complex either. a fair barley wine but not typical of its style.

2006 bottle, just bought it, not sure why everyone else seems to be getting ’07 bottles, but Im not complaining. Cloudy, dark amber in color, sweet aroma of hops, molasses, citrus, honey. Well balanced, alcohol is well hidden for 11.1% abv. Taste is sweet, honey, citrus with a little bitter hops in the finish.

12 oz bottle from New Beer Distributors, SoHo, NY. Pours a mildly dark, maybe more amberish colored ale. light head. the beer overall is perhaps a little too sweet for my palate for a barley wine, though it was definitely a reliable "go-to-barleywine" if you are into that type of beer. critiques are primarily the overwhelming sweetness, though the beer is fairly well balanced for an alcohol content of nearly 11%. go for the victory old horizon though if you are looking for true quality in barley wine.

(’07 bottling) Nice deep copper colour with little to no head. Aroma is sweet and boozy. Cherry & Apricot fruit tones, cotton candy. Flavour carries dark cherry cough syrup (slightly medicinal though not much) backed by smokey malt. Alc. comes through strong yet smooth in the finish.
