Commercial Description:
Pilsner may be better known, but the everyday beer of Bavaria is pilsner’s cousin, Hellesbier. The German word "hell" seems to evoke perdition, but simply means "pale". The Helles style is a golden all-malt lager that emphasizes malt character over hop bitterness and aroma. Brooklyner Keller Helles is truly old-school; the word "keller" means "cellar" and denotes a beer that is unfiltered and super-fresh. Our brewmaster has spent many fine afternoons drinking Hellesbier in Munich’s beer gardens and decided to bring you an authentic flavor that’s rarely seen in the United States. Fermented and then lagered for weeks at very cold temperatures, Keller Helles has a pale gold color, a haze of German lager yeast, a fresh malty/yeasty aroma, a lilt of floral hops and a dry clean finish. It tastes like a summer day, and a very nice one at that. It’s great with fresh goat cheeses, seafood, and just about anything that tastes good at a barbecue.

Malt: 100% Bavarian two-row Pilsner malt
Hops: 100% Hallertauer Perle (Germany)
O.G.: 12°
ABV: 5.0%

Available draught-only at select beer bars and restaurants.

On draft at the Half Moon. Pour was clear golden color, ample carabonation bubbles, good initial thick head, nice rings of lacing. The aroma was quite nice, grainy, pilsy malts, sweet grains, dry smell from the carbonation. The flavor followed suit, a malty sweet pils base, touch of grassy hops although not quite firm enough (more malty than a pilsner or even a traditional helles), faintly sweet, finishing clean. A touch more hops, and we’ve got ourselves something quite nice going on here! Pretty solid within its class, though!

Enjoyable, even the first thing that came to mind was Wonder Bread. Pale yellow, thin whate head. Aroma was the aforementioned Wonder Bread, plus some mellow spice notes. Some bready, toasty notes in the flavor, as well. Tasty and easy to drink. On tap at the Flying Saucer, Charlotte.

On tap @ the Oldsmar Tap House. Pours clear gold with white head into imperial pint glass. The aroma comes across as faint but grows with time emitting sweetness, grains, hay and wheat. The taste is much like the aroma with a shot of malt sweetness that runs into graininess and hits some mildly tart and bitter noble hop notes by midway. The wheat and more noble hoppiness shine through into the finish.

Earthy, strong grass, with light yeast, and a touch of citrus. This is a very light and refreshing brew. While not outstanding, it was a great thirst quencher at the outdoor concert I had it at.

Draft at the Dilly Deli. Pours a very light gold in color with a nice two inch head. Crystal clear. Smell is lager yeast and a bit of hops. Taste is the same as the smell. Decent amount of hopping. Very crisp and refreshing. Very, very easy to drink. Great session beer for the summer.

On tap at Tyler’s, Durham. A translucent golden pour with a modest head. The aroma is initially crisp hops with faint grainy malts in there. Flavorful and slightly fruity initially, the flavor washes out really quickly. Finish is not dry at all, alas, but rather watery. Probably a decent quaffer on some level but I found this to be disappointing.

Cloudy yellow pour, thin off-white head. A small amount of spotty lace. Grassy aroma. Thin bodied. Toast, grassy hops, and fruit.
