Commercial Description:
Pilsner may be better known, but the everyday beer of Bavaria is pilsner’s cousin, Hellesbier. The German word "hell" seems to evoke perdition, but simply means "pale". The Helles style is a golden all-malt lager that emphasizes malt character over hop bitterness and aroma. Brooklyner Keller Helles is truly old-school; the word "keller" means "cellar" and denotes a beer that is unfiltered and super-fresh. Our brewmaster has spent many fine afternoons drinking Hellesbier in Munich’s beer gardens and decided to bring you an authentic flavor that’s rarely seen in the United States. Fermented and then lagered for weeks at very cold temperatures, Keller Helles has a pale gold color, a haze of German lager yeast, a fresh malty/yeasty aroma, a lilt of floral hops and a dry clean finish. It tastes like a summer day, and a very nice one at that. It’s great with fresh goat cheeses, seafood, and just about anything that tastes good at a barbecue.

Malt: 100% Bavarian two-row Pilsner malt
Hops: 100% Hallertauer Perle (Germany)
O.G.: 12°
ABV: 5.0%

Available draught-only at select beer bars and restaurants.

At the brewery: Appear - Pale yellow with hazy clarity. Very high cartbonation. Low white non-persistant head. Aroma - Clean light malt. Baked bread. Flavor - Fresh bready malt. Low earth / resiny hop flavor. Modertaely low hop bitterness in the finish lingering through the aftertaste. Mouthfeel - Medium-light body with high carbonation leading to carbonic byte in the finish. Overall - Quite refreshing but somewhat bland. Nothing bad to say, but fairly unremarkable.

Tap. Pours a clear golden with a one finger white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of pilsner malt and a hint of spicy hops. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and a sweet pilsner malt finish. Very good.

Draft... Clear yellow lager with a mid-sized, fluffy, white head. Good retention. Sweet honey and peppery hop nose. Medium-bodied with a lightly creamy mouthfeel. Mostly sweet, but nice bitterness and acidity. Grainy. Sweet, but also tannic, finish. I’m not a big Keller or Helles guy, but this one is nice.

Brooklyner is term that harkens back to an older New York. And like older things, it could be said, “that it ain’t like that anymore.” Brooklyner Keller Helles is a old fashioned, old world classic lager. Imagine Victory Lager with just a bit more refinement, more subtle hop flavor; lots of time and love went into this. A great alternative to just about every other “default” beer, such as Stella. A must have.

Draft - Max’s. Sparkling gold, creamy white head. Fruity floral aromas lay on soft peppery tea and orange zest-like notes. Nutty earth and grassy floral flavors round to just a hint of back end breadiness. Medium bodied and crisp with soft carbonation. Very well done and quite tasty...

Draft at Barcade. All I could say when I drank this was "wow". Grassy, fresh hops balance perfectly with the sweet malts. I love that Barcade seems to tap the Brewmaster Reserve stuff almost the minute it arrives. Even more amazingly, the bartender at the bar poured the beer wth a head. Why are the hipster dufusses in Brooklyn so fuckin dumb that they demand a beer that loos like a glass of piss? Props to Brooklyn for making a great beer and to whichever bartender at Barcade that served it to me.
