Commercial Description:
Pilsner may be better known, but the everyday beer of Bavaria is pilsner’s cousin, Hellesbier. The German word "hell" seems to evoke perdition, but simply means "pale". The Helles style is a golden all-malt lager that emphasizes malt character over hop bitterness and aroma. Brooklyner Keller Helles is truly old-school; the word "keller" means "cellar" and denotes a beer that is unfiltered and super-fresh. Our brewmaster has spent many fine afternoons drinking Hellesbier in Munich’s beer gardens and decided to bring you an authentic flavor that’s rarely seen in the United States. Fermented and then lagered for weeks at very cold temperatures, Keller Helles has a pale gold color, a haze of German lager yeast, a fresh malty/yeasty aroma, a lilt of floral hops and a dry clean finish. It tastes like a summer day, and a very nice one at that. It’s great with fresh goat cheeses, seafood, and just about anything that tastes good at a barbecue.

Malt: 100% Bavarian two-row Pilsner malt
Hops: 100% Hallertauer Perle (Germany)
O.G.: 12°
ABV: 5.0%

Available draught-only at select beer bars and restaurants.

Pours a faint yellow into the glass with a small white head. Aroma is grainy. Flavor is slightly toasty. Nothing too interesting about this beer, but it is extremely refreshing

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Clear gold pour with a puffy white head. Aroma is light and grassy with some dry hops, grass, and earthy notes. Flavor is very light and disappears quickly. Tastes basically like a beer. Nothing too special to report.

Draft at barcade & Blind Tiger. Pours a light golden body with a thick white head. Aroma is sweet, yeasty spiciness and some earthy hoppiness. Flavor is sticky wheaty maltiness with some spices and light pilsner flavors. Very crisp and easy drinking with little abv present. I believe this is one of the better helles i’ve had.

Draft at brewery. Pours a slightly cloudish golden color. Aroma is mostly yeasty wheat. Tastes of malt, wheat, slight earthy yeast, little bubble gum. Palate is clean amazingly, and finishes with a slight straw taste.

Tap at Barcade. Pours a very hazy murky bright golden yellow with a thin tich white head with great lace. Aroma was doughy, pils malt, nice earthy and spicy hops with just a touch of grass, and unfortunately a touch of sulfur as well. Sulfer is still in the flavor as well, but there is lots going on to cover it up- more doughy crackery pils, fresh baked bread, awesome fresh green hops- hallertauer/tettnang spicyness and a great smooth bitter finish. Crisp and refreshing on a hot day like yesterday.

On tap at Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a hazy pale yellow, with a foamy white head and sticky lacing. Muted biscuit aromas in the nose, hay, some distant cider. Flavor is big crisp malt. Some biscuit and hay. Simple but tasty. Crisp, very drinkable and refreshing. It is what it is and it’s done well.

Tap at BT. Pale straw color with a white head. Simple but balanced across the board. Definitely a great warm weather beer. The finish is a little too doughy for me but still a nicely made beer.

First off, I can’t believe the low ratings for this. Tap at Barcade. Very pale golden-coloured beer with a thick sticky white head. Aroma is great, fresh and bready with a lovely light citrus/zesty hallertauer/tettnanger hops over a very crisp pilsner malt base. Flavour is very simple but perfectly balanced, crisp European pilsner malt with a lightly minerally backnote of bitterness. There is enough hop aroma is the nose to invite you in but the low bitterness lets the crisp maltiness also shine through. Clean crisp bitterness with a lightly grassy flavour on the back... man, this beer in fantastic. They’ve nailed the style and on a muggy New York evening, I can’t think of anything I’d rather have. In fact, I’m going to have another.
