Fine and creamy foam, medium adhesion and duration. Smooth scent, light smoked rumors, bitter, with braced malt notes. Slightly pungent taste with smoke, wood and ash aromas. Smooth and bitterish end. thehoff (569), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA

Had this at Galleghers in Kalamazoo after coming back from the beer tour at Arcadia Brewing Company in Battle Creek. Nice color, dark brown, red. Nice malt flavor, toffee, coffee, chocolate. Very drinkable and another good one from Broughton. Hawksfan17 (717), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 9, 2006 This ale pours a dark brown with a frothy white head that leaves nice lacing. It smells sweet, like chocolate, and a little fruity. It was nice going down, sweet but with a malty balance that left me wanting more. TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jan 28, 2006 Black Douglas pours to a deep ruby red/brown color with a creamy white head and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is just packed with big malty aromas. Aromas of toffee, bittersweet chocolate, and caramel flood the nose. The palate is rich and full on the tongue with a hefty body. Flavors of sweet malt, toffee, burnt currants, and bitter sweet chocolate coat the tongue. Black Douglas finishes very sweet and malty up front, a touch warm and soothing, and then ends with just enough hop bitterness so it is not too cloying.
This is a wonderfully malt accented brew, and a classic example of Scottish ale. This beer is very flavorful and delicious, and is the perfect beer to sip and savor as an after dinner drink or a night cap. It would also make a great desert beer, and would work well with rich, chocolate deserts. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA
