Aroma is mabey a bit peat-ish? Flavor is a quite dry and a reasonably complex, well balanced mix of mild hops and light, aromatic malts. Finishes with a touch of bitterness and lingering maltiness. Smooth and creamy palate. Slightly malty with some hops. An enjoyable beer but nothing spectacular. maeib (4766), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England

A dark chestnut brown coloured beer with a dark fruit aroma with raisins and figs noted. The taste is malty, oaty and toasty with a smooth mouthfeel and a rich clean taste. Very drinkable and my idea of a Scottish Ale. GarethYoung (1110), Glasgow, Scotland

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 12, 2005 Pouring a rich mahogany color with an okay frizzy tan head, this ESB has the aroma that one associates with a Scottish ale and the hop is nearly undetectable. It’s smooth, medium bodied with a nutty, malty taste and a hint of dark chocolate. One catches the light hopping on the way out, leaving a dry, slightly bitter finish. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 28, 2004 raisin colored, murky. in appearance it could be a water sample-- or maybe a soil sample-- from the amazon delta, with a bit of tanin rich brown mud in there too. the head was creamy and nice, but wouldn’t sheet -- little anarchist bits of foam preferred to raft up in small, dotty tribes of foam. aroma is of heavily mature malts, prune and match head, almost watermelon fruitiness, musty, bits of leather soaked ’till soft in flood water, and notes of cocoa powder. earthy stuff, in short. on the tongue, it presented mesquite baked bean flavor and smokiness with maple sugar candy, but disappoints with it’s thin watery body. the flavor is then usurped by tangerine rind hop bitterness rather than the visually apparent malts (a surprise to get hops when the aroma screams malt) . brisk but tiny-toothed carbonation, orange zest and watery scotch.
