Flavours are equally malty with some roast malts, licourice and earthiness. Some gooseberry in there, too. Has a good dry finish. Not bad. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jul 25, 2004 A bland, unexciting, and overwhelmingly unimpressive scottish ale. Reddish brown. Nose lightly scotched, a bit of peat, some malts. Flavor pretty thin, peat and smoke stop by for a brief visit, but nothing much going on. Not actively bad, just actively uninteresting. steview (902), Los Angeles, California, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 19, 2004 Dark ruby in color with a somewhat bubbly, yet, creamy eggshell white head. Roasted malt dominates the aroma with hints of chocolate. Taste is surprisingly balanced. Flavors of smoke, malt, fruit and a restrained sweetness that I like. Perhaps a tad thin, but that is really just nitipicking. Finsih was slightly bitter and pleasant. Overall a very good brew. Surprised it’s not rated higher.
