Commercial Description:
Bottle, Regular
Robert Burns the legendary Scottish poet used his role as an Excise man as an inspiration for the rollicking song "the deil’s awa with the Exciseman" In the 19th Century it was the Excise men who had responsibility of applying tax to all beers and ales. The name 80/- derives from the duty rate stamped on the end of the casks. Exciseman’s 80/- was specially brewed to mark 25 Years of Brewing at Broughton Ales.A dark malty brew, full of the rich flavours typical of classic Scottish 80/- ales. Full drinking with a good hop aftertaste Just the sort of ale Burns would have savoured during his time as an officer of the Excise Major ingredients are:- Optic Pale Ale Malt, Black Malt, Crystal Malt Hops used are English grown Challenger, Fuggles and first Gold.

Bottle from Moffat Wine Shop. Dark copper colour with a good white head leaving delicate lacework. Good body, typical for an 80/-, sweetish, malty, caramel on the nose, fruity hops lurking in the background, a good long finish, perhaps not the best 80/- but a damn fine example...look for it!

bottled, from the Fête de la Bière 2005, Lausanne - clear and dark amber colour, fine and firm white head leaving a nice lace, subtle maltiness with notes of nuts, very creamy mouthfeel for a medium malt body, the bitterness is pronounced and persists in the long malty and gently hoppy finish - good but not really complex

Medium beige head. Brown body with carbonation. Harmonic fruity roasty straw and earth aroma with cinnamon and chocolate notes. Dry-sweetish roasty spicy caramelly taste with wooden cinnamon notes. Fizzy, sharpish mouthfeel. Mid-to-full body. Dry roasty cinnamon aftertaste with earthy peppery notes. Nice and drinkable. (0.5l bottle, Wine rack, Edinburgh.)

Bottle. Very malty aroma with a little brown sugar and a hint of flowery hops. Clear dark brown colour, stable head. Very malty flavour that unfortunately has a slightly sharp bitterness. Liquorice aftertaste.

500ml Bottle 04/06/2007 Fruity and slightly sweet aroma. Some carbonation. Mid brown coloured fruity and a little sweet on the palate with a crisp and slightly bitter full malt finish.

Bottled. Dark red and brown in colour. Aromas are malty, chocolate and caramel with sweet and sour notes. Oddly some warm milk with dry hops. Flavours are malty with the same fruity sweet and sour character. Chocolate malts are followed by bitter hops. Has a good gentle sparkle. Not too impressive on the finish - just more fruitiness. Pretty decent.

Bottled, pasteurised, 500 ml. Brown amber beer with lasting head. Reminiscent of a stronger mil, grainy taste but with a fruitness of perhaps blueberries. Biscuity malt body but not much finish.
