Commercial Description:
Bottle; Pasteurised.
Sometimes known as Kinmount Willie Oatmeal Stout in the US.
Ingredients: Maris Otter Malt; Black Malt; Roasted Barley; Pinhead Oats; English grown Fuggles, Goldings and Target hops.
"Oats are used in the brewing of Scottish Oatmeal Stout to enhance the flavour of the black malt and roasted barley which give this traditional beer its rich dark colour and strong, complex roasted malt aroma and flavour, reminiscent of coffee and chocolate. These flavours are offset by a good hop bitterness and silky aftertaste."

Almost pitch black. It has a ruby tinge that can be discerned when held up to a bright light. Solidly malty aroma with cocoa powder and a little damp cardboard (which, to be fair, wore off after a while. Very roasty flavour with more bitter chocolate and a medicinal tang. The finish is a bit metallic with some lasting bitterness in the aftertaste. Not very full bodied. Prickly mouthfeel. Not a very sweet stout, in fact quite dry. I’m not sure that all oatmeal stouts are necessarily sweet stouts.

bottle, rating from old notes. Deep brown pour. Roasted caramel malt aroma and flavor, notes of coffee. Kinda thin. Something diacytl or butterscotchy in there.

bottled; from the Fête de la Bière, Lausanne 2005 - opaque black coloured, the initial head does not resist more than 10 seconds, leaving just some disparate bubbles, the nose is of roasted corns with some coffeish notes, the body is effervescent, tart with a quite harsh bitterness, the finish is very dry and corny - too rough and barely satisfying by itself but very pleasant accompanied by a good cheese.

I have a grievance with this one. The guy on my bottle, from Peace St. Market in Raleigh, looks like a young Sean Connery....gray haired, with a metallic helmet. He’s pissed, and ready to kick someone’s ass. The guy in the Rb photo looks like a pompous, posed, British general.....and we all know how British generals fared during the Revolutionary War. At any rate, this one pours deep black with brown menisci and a minimal, tan head. Aroma is chocoff, fruit, nuts, some cabernet. More of a scotch ale or porter aroma than an oatmeal stout. Tastes roasty malty, with some nuts, chocoff, and rauchy elements. Medium palate. Gets more watery as it warms. I must say that I have been generally disappointed with these British/Scottish sub-6% beers that I’ve found in North Carolina. They are quite frankly not worth their import price of 4-5 bucks a bottle. I will rerate this one in the future, but I’ve never to date had a rerate that differed more than +/- 0.2 points.

Black colour with a baige head. Weak roasted aroma and a light roasted coffee taste. Medium body and a dry finish.

Bottle. Very dark with some red tints, not much head. Aromas are dry roast cofee malts with a mellowing oatiness. Flavours are roast malts with flavours similar to flat and less sweet coca cola. The oatiness comes through eventually. Quite thin and watery on the palate. This left me unimpressed.

Dark brown colour with a light brown head. Sweet aroma with light coffee notes. Malty, light smoky flavor with an oatmeal sweetness.
