Commercial Description:
Isabella (Tibbie) Shiels was born in the Scottish Borders in 1782. In 1823 she moved into St Mary’s Cottage on the shores of St Mary’s Loch along with her husband and six bairns. Within a year her husband had died and to support herself and her children she developed the cottage as a lodging house and inn. As a result of her own hard work and considerable personality Tibbie Shiels Inn became a favourite with many well known literary figures of the time such as Sir Walter Scott, Robert Lewis Stephenson, and Robert Hogg "the Ettrick Shepherd". Such was the success of her enterprise that the Tibbie Shiels Inn still welcomes travellers to this day with a warm fire, good food, stunning views and excellent ale. We like to think this fine, award winning ale is a fitting tribute to Tibbie, with its complex dark malty flavour and a subtle hop aftertaste brewed with a great deal of attention and care. An ale to be remembered down the years.

Bottle 50cl. @ post Borefts BF 09 hotel tasting
Clear medium amber color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted - roasted, caramel, grass. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average duration. Body is medium to light, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20091031]

50cl bottle from Tesco, Edinburgh. Copper with a fast fading cream head; treacle and malt aromas; strong. chewy malty flavours with a hint of nuts and toffee; the finish is dry and smoky. Very pleasant.

Good dark copper colour, head is reasonable, lasts quite well. Malt dominates the nose and the palate, with a touch of hops lurking in the background. Initially, the palate was quite closed and didn’t give much away, but after a few seconds the malty flavours really came to the fore and lingered well on the finish. A good brew, not Broughtons best, but a cracker nevertheless, Haven’t been to the inn in years, must pay it a visit soon and report back!
